I am Zefram Cochrane
I invented warp drive in 2063, bringing faster-than-light travel (FTL) technology to humanity.
A nuclear war later dubbed World War III lasted only a few short months, though 600 million people perished. In 2053, an uneasy truce was signed, and around this time, I began construction of the first warp-capable vessel, the Phoenix.
On April 5, 2063 at 11:15 I made Earth's first warp flight. My warp signature was detected by a Vulcan survey ship which then made first contact with humans. Development of FTL technology was the Vulcan society's prerequisite for first contact with another civilization.
Summing up the legacy of my achievements, c. 2073 I said the following famous quote, "Don't try to be a great man. Just be a man, and let history make its own judgment."
The irony of the statement was lost upon history:
My original purpose in building a warp drive was to become rich from the sale and license of its technology a far cry from the later public perception that he and his colleagues wished to usher in a new visionary era for humanity.
