The Big Spin is a captivating, punk rock band from Elizabethtown, PA. The band consists of four members. Paul Scene sings and plays guitar; his stage name is a sarcastic pseudonym directed at self-proclaimed, “scene†kids who use punk and hardcore music as a fashion statement. Marc BigSpin also sings and plays guitar. Paddy Whack plays bass and sings occasionally. Lane Insane plays drums insanely well, but he is not at all fanatical. Paul, Marc, Patrick and Lane have all been classically trained; Paul and Lane learned on violin, while Marc and Patrick can play cello. Together, this electrifying quartet delivers original, hard-hitting punk rock with a variety of song topics ranging from political to emotional.
Currently, the Big Spin is working hard on their third studio album, entitled Mass Produced Music for Mass Produced Minds. They are a true do-it-yourself punk band; they do the entirety of recording in Lane’s basement with their P.A. gear and a laptop computer. However, the Big Spin does much more than recording. The band is constantly searching for punk shows to play. The band is committed to playing as many local shows as possible, to broaden their increasing fan base. This is but one of their goals. The Big Spin would like to sign onto a large indie label and tour extensively, to promote its political ideals and to produce quality music that many of their peers enjoy.
Since members Marc and Paul formed the band in 2003, the Big Spin has gone through a series of changes. The band was originally conceived as a pop-punk, teenage rock band. During that era, the Big Spin recorded its first album, with Marc playing bass, and drummer Peter Davis, at the Green Room Studio in Harrisburg, PA. The 4017, randomly named after a sticker on an apple, contained the fan favorite, “Delaware,†a ska-punk tribute to a state where even a ruined vacation proves fun. Around that time, the band played at the school talent show, birthday parties, and other small venues.
In 2006, the band added Lane as their new drummer. Later that year, the Big Spin played in a Battle of the Bands at the world-famous Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia, PA, with their new guitarist Luke. A few weeks later they started on their sophomore studio work, Take A Look Around. The album showed that the band’s songs were maturing, but the quality was much lower because it was poorly recorded in a friend’s basement. In April of 2007, the Big Spin amazed Elizabethtown High School, winning its Battle of the Bands; they received a $100 gift card to Guitar Center, which has contributed to the P.A. they use to record today. Luke decided that punk rock wasn’t for him; he wanted to play in a different band. Therefore, the ever-adaptive Big Spin’s lineup changed once again; Marc made the transition to guitar, and Patrick, a close friend, hopped aboard on bass.
The Big Spin was originally named after the skateboard move, the “big spin.†But, as the musicians have matured, the name has been given new meaning; it makes reference to the big political spinsters that deceive the public with half-truths. The Big Spin is a name the band stands behind because they stand against it. And they will continue to stand behind it for many years to come.
