Agnes Bernelle and her family fled Berlin to come to England during the war. Her father wrote Satirical Caberet and owned many of the theatres of Berlin. Before they left, he handed his theatres to Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil so it was only fitting that Agnes would follow in their footsteps. Her first dalliance into cabaret was at the Establishment Club run by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, where she became a regular performer. There, she met a lord, married him and ran off to Ireland to live in his castle. They had three children and lived in domestic bliss, until her husband ran off with her best friend. Agnes took to Satire again with a vengence. She moved to Dublin and at the age of fifty, with the help of Elvis Costello, she recorded two Albums 'Your fathers lying dead on the ironing board' and 'Mother the wardrobes full of Infantry men'. Tom Waits once said she was his favourite recording artist. Agnes died a few years ago but her music and memory lives on....
