We are the Memphis Central High School Concert Singers under the direction of Mr. Gaylon Robinson. We are a select group of individuals who are chosen via an audition process. The choir is generally made up of sophomores to seniors, but at times will contain a few especially talented freshmen. We are a choir known throughout the state of Tennessee as being the best-in-state. We hold concerts throughout the year free-of-charge.
The Concert Singers was established during the 1997-98 school year as the premier performing ensemble of the Memphis Central HS choral program. The Concert Singers quickly gained prominence as one of the leading choirs in the area. Over the years the Concert Singers have won numerous awards including receiving top honors at the Chicago Music Festival ('98), Virginia Beach Music Festival ('99), Orlando Musicfest (2001 & 2003), the New York Music Festival (2004 &2005) and Chicago Music Festival (2006).
In 2003, the Concert Singers became the first choir from Memphis in over 15 years to be selected to perform for the TN Music Educators Association. In 2007, the Concert Singers joined with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Faure's Requiem and became the first high school choir to perform a choral masterwork with the orchestra. The Concert Singers were selected to perform for the American Choral Directors Association National Convention this spring in Miami, FL. The singers were one of 40 ensembles selected nationally from a group of nearly 300 auditioned choirs that included professional, university, small college, and high school choirs. In doing so, the Concert Singers became the first choir to ever be selected from the state of Tennessee to perform at the convention.
