About Me

MyGen Profile GeneratorHI. Me = Matt Covey.
I've been playing drums and percussion for 17 years now. I studied classical percussion and jazz drumset at Western Connecticut State University School of Music. While there I got the chance to meet and play with some amazing young musicians, and I even performed with a few world renowned musicians. So I decided that playing music was the coolest thing i could do.
I'm currently playing for the following bands/artists:
1) THE FLAMING TSUNAMIS
(experimental progressive hardcore/dance fusion; kill normal records)
2) SHAI HULUD
(legendary melodic hardcore band)
My main project is THE FLAMING TSUNAMIS out of New Haven. Since I joined the band in May of 2007, we've toured across the country and the UK playing with bands such as Melt Banana, Mustard Plug, Folly, Mu330, Sonic Boom Six, Vaz, Westbound Train, and Whole Wheat Bread.I started performing professionally in 2000, focusing mainly on the drumset. My first major professional experience came in 2005 and early '06 when I gigged heavily with New York-based Hip-hop/Soul/Funk group The Evolved. We played all over the northeastern U.S., and got to share the stage with bands like Tower of Power, Bomb Squad, Superhoney, and Pencilgrass along the way.
Since then, I've been asked to back many different groups and musicians. From 2005-2007 I played drums for THE HAND GRENADE SERENADE, songwriting-driven punk rock with heavy reggae and americana/acoustic leanings; I spent brief stints playing with hip-hop/soul duo, FLOWERS & KAIN, and experimental chicagopunk band THE SUICIDE DOLLS.
I've done quite a bit of studio work in the last few years. I'm currently working on a full length album with New London's pop jazz/funk duo, THE FRANKLIN BROTHERS. I can also be heard on recordings for The Hand Grenade Serenade, The Evolved, and Kate Graves. Recently I've been doing session work for producer Kenny Cascioli at his place, Ca$h Studios in Brewster, NY. Recent sessions there yielded several drum tracks that are being used for songs on releases by singer V'NESSA TZAVELLAS and hip-hop emcee SHAKA THE K.I.N.G.table style="border-collapse:collapse;"

Listen to your speakers....

It's my mission to play whatever is needed for the project at hand while still retaining my personal sound and energy at all times. To me, the worst thing would be to sound canned.

Beyond that, you tell me. SERIOUSLY.

I believe it is a professional's job to be open to and accept any ideas or criticism. So PLEASE, leave a comment if you like my playing, hate it, or have any suggestions.

THANKS!
