Rock and Pop Are Dead - Long Live The Hexyl Circle

About Me

My name is Ian Duncan Smith. I'm a singer songwriter from Manchester now living in Wiltshire. How are you doing? I recently did guest vocals on Umami, a great CD by Murat Ses .Get Your Own! | View Slideshow When Dylan walked into the Wah! Cafe for the first time, he saw a man playing a guitar and a basket being passed round for money. No one was listening to the man playing guitar, and there was no money in the basket. But then along came Myspace, and here I am writing songs about the end of 20th century rock and pop. Rock and pop are dead. Long live The Hexyl Circle. A number of things have happened: Top of the Pops, a long running music show, was axed by the BBC after 42 years on air. The first edition of the show was broadcast on January 1st, 1964, when The Beatles were Number One with I Want to Hold Your Hand. The show was presented by Jimmy Saville (pictured). In the 1970s, Top Of The Pops was watched by just under 20 million people. However in recent times the viewing figures fell as low as 1 million. The programme switched from BBC1 to BBC2, but failed to increase its ratings. The final episode was hosted by Jimmy Saville on July 30th. This year, Dylan released a new album. Then it dawned on me-the man survived the pop era. He was there at the beginning, the middle, and the end.The song, September 73, came when I saw this guy playing to an empty bar. It was the end of the month, and everyone was out in their cars trying to make their targets. Bad time to play, the end of the month. Salaries haven't come in, and targets haven't been met. It also made me dwell on the nature of commodity, pop, rock, myspace, and the selling, the machine. Nice time to write a song when you're utterly pissed off about how this shit works.Somebody Will Pay - same thing. In the end, someone will pay, nothing's free. All these songs go out on Myspace for nothing, and that's got to have a knock on. I haven't bought a CD in ages. I don't need to. I listen to Broadjam and Myspace. In this song, there are two tribes, those that take things for nothing, and those that live off the land. And I'm in the middle.Who Am I to Disagree? isn't about the end of 20th century rock and pop. It's about a feeling of not being heard. Artists need audiences. Hi audience. And the last one, Whatever It Is I Want It. I was struggling with a riff, and I thought what would McCartney do. So I played Yesterday, and then I came up with this idea of taking each 20th century icon: Holly, Presley, Lennon, McCartney and I tried to get into what they would do with the song. The Whatever It Is, simply is songwriting skill, but it grew into something much bigger than that. Please take a look at my Forthcoming Shows. They're actually links to my published stories.
