Alter Echo

About Me

Alter Echo (AKA Sound Secretion) is a Dub technician of the highest caliber. As a founding partner in the groundbreaking Portland based label BSI Records, a producer and musician, collaborator and remixer, Alter Echo has established himself firmly in the top ranks of Dubwise producers world wide. His skills as a recording and mixing engineer, honed at studios in New York City, have led him to become the engineer of choice in the hip hop and electronic dance music communities burgeoning across the Northwest, recording and/or mixing numerous tracks and albums from The Lifesavas, Libretto, Boom Bap Project, and more. Derry is not merely a part of the hip hop/electronica movement here in the Northwest, but rather an architect of the sound, which is gaining in notoriety world wide each year.
Representing a sound equally weighted in both Hip Hop and Dub music, Alter Echo is poised at the forefront of an international movement in sample-based music. By deconstructing the constraints of genre specific music production, He allows his compositions to shift and slide, alternately providing beats reminiscent of Hip Hops glory days of the early 1990s while reflecting the forward thinking of the pioneers of the dub music of the 1970s. Alter Echo's productions are the result of the simultaneous use of both the most modern digital studio equipment available along side vintage analogue mixing desks, effects, and outboard gear, allowing his songs to maintain a gritty sense of realism while freeing him from the constraints of a strictly hardware studio environment.

Sounds Like: He's a travelogue, of sorts, cataloguing sounds and snippets from disparate lands and influence as if gluing together a scrapbook, sounding altogether futuristic, united under one scavenged, wired beat. Post-modern, they might have called it a few years ago--it's something like dumpster diving and finding only rubies and working Rolexes.~Julianne Shepard: The Portland Mercury 17 June 2004
