Many people ask me what style I play and I usually say everything. When I started playing guitar at the age of 14, I listened to anything with guitar in it. My first guitar heroes were Page, Hendrix and Joe Perry (Aerosmith’s “Toys in the Attic” was one of the best rock LPs of the ‘70’s). I also liked blues and jazz and played in the high schools jazz band. At the same time I listened to bands like Rush and Yes and was influenced by the classical guitar they occasionally used. When I went off to college I studied classical guitar. I graduated in Texas in the mid-80’s and soon discovered that I couldn’t get a gig unless I played country. At that time, I was not much of a country fan and like most musicians with an academic background, I looked down upon country musicians. By the way, this condescending attitude is still prevalent among non-country musicians and was demonstrated on the CMT Crossroads show when Brad Paisley and John Mayer got together. John Mayer got an education on the musicianship of Nashville "pickers" as Brad literally played circles around him. What I learned was that country guitar was a difficult style to play correctly. With jazz and rock the right hand up/down picking style usually works for both styles but in country, one must adopt a different technique. Oddly, the style I didn’t like at first began to grow on me and I developed a great respect for the great players from Nashville and a love for country music. I am still committed to versatility. Since I read music, I get many calls to play in pit orchestras. I have several church gigs and am involved with some local jazz groups. I occasionally have solo fingerstyle gigs. Today I am a professional guitarist/instructor. I teach at a local university and I gig around the Oklahoma and Texas area.. I have a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance (Classical) from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, a Master of Science in Management & Human Relations from Abilene Christian University and a Master of Music in Guitar Performance from the University of Oklahoma. I am currently the lead player for Wade Quinton (WadeQuinton.com) and I am involved in other musical projects as well. Check out Wade's Myspace page ( http://www.myspace.com/wadequinton) and you can find a current band schedule. I am married and have two wonderful children.
