In the afternoons after pre-school, I entertained myself MC-ing imaginary radio sets with the 7" 45's that came in to the thrift store my parents ran. Dad gave a crash-course on taping these which added another layer of fascination during playback when, for example, a li'l surf-guitar from "Moon in the Afternoon" cut to refrain "Green Tambourine," or a snippet of that StarWars' klezmer-ish Bar theme jumped to the sound effects section of Cpt.& Tenneille's "Muscrat Love." Of course, I also enjoyed singing along to tunes such as Gene Pitney's "Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" and Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun," but my absolute favorite was the "Ballad of John & Yoko," even though it would make my father, the evangelical minister, regret ever having turned me onto this hobby. When he heard my little-voice singing: "Christ you know it ain't easy/...how hard it can be-eeee, the way things are goin', they're gonna crucify me!" he came busting in from the other room to smash the 45. Though the song's meaning still eluded my young mind, that event confirmed the mysteriously magical power of music (as if endlessly singing old converted tavern-tunes to salvation army chorales and hymns hadn't already piqued my curiosity).
By the late-80-s, in deep-cover as high-school choirboy-thespian, I got to DJ on the local college station and "spread the virus" found in Re:Search books, SUNY's old EAR-zine and whatever else I could find on fortunate forays to larger mid-western cities, eventually the trail led to Amsterdam and Radio100, but that's another story for another time...
