About Me
Name Evolution: Sal Dodgeball '04-05. Detroit Warriors 2006- Present.History:
After years of whaling on small children in a cramped gym, a group of nine day camp counselors at the Salvation Army Day Camp in Dearborn Heights, Michigan entered a dodgeball tournament. The tournament which was sponsored by the Detroit Dodgeball league, was the counselors chance to prove they were dodgeball skills were far superior to competitive dodgeballers across the state, not just 10-year-old day campers.Sporting undersized jerseys formerly worn by day campers, the counselors donned the name "Sal DodgebalL," and quickly showed the metro Detroit league how dodgeball was really played.Sal Dodgeball cruised through the round-robin style bracket and took all the onlookers at Royal Oak high school by storm. Touting an unblemished record through the round robin play, Sal Dodgeball earned a top seed in the single elimination tournament. After winning their first two playoff games, Sal Dodgeball was dealt an unexpected blow in a form of a loss by The Young Gunz in the tournament semifinals. The loss ended Sal Dodgeball's tournament run, while the Young Gunz went on to earn the inaugural Detroit Dodgeball tournament crown.Despite the loss, Sal Dodgeball was determined to avenge their loss. One month later, Sal Dodgeball did just that by winning the second ever dodgeball tournament sponsored by the Detroit Sports club. By doing so they beat Young Gunnz, and grabbed the best record (10-1) in the Detroit Dodgeball League's adult male competitive division.Ten tournaments and ten months later, Sal Dodgeball found themselves in the finals of the Michigan Indoor State Dodgeball championships versus Bailey Painting an up and coming team with a 12-2 record. Down two games to none in the best of five match Sal Dodgeball persevered and won the Michigan Indoor State Dodgeball Tournament. The win garnered enough points for Sal Dodgeball to overtake The Young Gunz as the first ever dodgeball state champions of Michigan. In it's first year the Detroit Dodgeball league featured more than 50 male competitive teams, neither of which could beat Sal Dodgeball even though Sal played many tournaments coed, and others with players under the 18 year old age limit.`Sal's improbablE 28-17 2005 regular season record earned them a free trip to the National Amatuer Dodgeball championships in Schaumburg, ILL where they finished with a 3-2 record and placed ninth among 35 competitive mens teams. After the 2005 Outdoor National tournament, Sal Dodgeball combined with the No. 3 ranked team in Michigan, the Weekend Warriors, to become the ultimate dodgeball powerhourse. In two tournaments in the 2005-2006 season the Sal Dodgeball/Weekend Warriors combination finished 2nd and third respectively. The only team the dodgeball power was unable to defeat was none other than the two-time defending National Champion team the Battletoads from Illinois.Sal dodgeball has also spun off teams that appear in the Michigan State Intramural league. Playing under the alias of "Detroit Dodgeball, or State Champs" Sal has finished second in the Michigan State intramural league three times. Winning the regular season all three times. In the fall of 2006 the under the name "State Champs" two of the original members of Sal Dodgeball led the team to the men's competitive intramural dodgeball championship. Ending with an impressive 13-0 record, outscoring opponents 68-9 in the playoffs. Some players have also tried their hat at club dodgeball at the college level suiting up for the Michigan State Spartans. In 2006, the players played in a MSU club team sponsored tournament- called the MSU Dodgeball-O-Rama. Of course, they won, defeating teams fully comprised of college dodgeballers from MSU and Delta College. In 2006 Sal Dodgeball participated in some tournaments with a team based out of Detroit called the Weekend Warriors. When the teams combine forces, they list their name as Sal/DOdgeball/Weekend Warriors. However, since much of the original team has changed- Sal has officially changed their name to the "Detroit Warriors". This past summer they finished 8th in the NADA outdoor national championships, and in the fall the Detroit Warriors traveled to the indoor national championships and finished third.
