About Me

the porridge smugglers are a group of home counties fops who delight in the retelling of ancient tales via the medium of song. they have chosen to tell these tales a capella feeling that the raw nakedness of their voices best lends itself to the passion these tales evoke. look out for more songs and gigs near you - assuming you live in the home counties.

http://www. myspace. com/porridgesmugglers - okay I’ll admit it was their name that attracted me, it was whispering softly in my ear come forth, spend a little time and listen to us. Go on you know you want to. And like a moth to a light bulb frankly I couldn’t resist. Now had I paused for a moment sat back and thought about my actions carefully perhaps I might have forewarned myself that things might not be all well in the Porridge Smugglers camp. The name aside, out first introduction to these - quite frankly - barking dudes - was a default picture of two ’human’ dogs (an oldie girl and an oldie bloke - both looking not unlike Hector from the 70‘s children‘s TV show ‘hector‘s house‘) dressed as farmers standing in front of a (we think) church holding a pitchfork. Now at this point our internal alarm should have been going ten to the dozen. But no - we persisted. Deeply deranged stuff, to be honest if he’d have been alive a certain Mr Peel would have annoyed / delighted (delete where applicable) audiences by the occasional addition of one of this lots tunes into the play list and rightly so because strange as it may seem it sounds like a workshop folly going on in an abandoned shed on the set of Vivian Stanshall’s ‘Sir Henry at Rawlinson End’ radio collages. Disturbing still these dudes do it a capella which for those that don’t know is not a banned sexual practice while for those who do know - don’t worry there’s no nasty Flying Pickets aftershocks here. Within you’ll be treated to 6 tracks (okay there is a certain amount of poetic licence in the description of ’treated’) that range from the general bastardisation of traditional tunes - the festive ‘three ships’ et al, 50’s tv commercial jingles (we made that one up) to the brutal murder of ’don’t sit under the apple tree’ (made I think - famous by the Andrew Sisters if I recall rightly) though here renamed as ’Evan’s Song’ which to be honest sounds like a fit fight between the Gremlins and the Muppets with Vic ’n’ Bob refereeing. As for ’Toby Keith’ don’t ask while ‘soggy cock mendeth’ or ‘s c mendez’ as it known here is given a full detailed explanation as to how, why and where it all originated. You will be hooked and you won’t thank me for it!!
