Well-lived lives make for good stories, and in turn, good stories make for great music. If you ask Star-Dome Latino breakout artist En-ko about his strongest assets as an artist, hell tell you that hes well rounded. Hes got a great voice, a strong flow, and is slick with word play and punch-lines, but as the conversation continues, it is easy to see that its the story of a song that he cares about most.
Born in Newark, NJ in the seventies, En-ko moved to his familys home in Puerto Rico in 1980, where he remained until 1991. After that, he moved around from state to state, experiencing more in each place than most emcees get to see on the blocks and avenues that they hold so dear. It is important to understand, however, that throughout his life, En-kos been more than a mere spectator to the streets. Since his mother did not speak very strong English, she often had to hustle to feed her three children, and this inherited hustler mentality is what has sustained En-ko to this day, and make songs like Benedicion very important to En-ko. Dedicated to his mother, he says it is one of the few songs that made him emotional while recording.
Good stories make great music, but this is hip-hop, and more importantly, this is latin hip-hop, which has yet to make a strong presence in the US. In hip-hop, the story is only a single element, and as was stated before, En-kos got the voice, and flow to garner attention and airplay. Its these factors that drew the attention of artists and collaborators like Treach of Naughty by Nature, Baby Ranks, and Master Joe. En-kos debut project also features the reunion of Lito and Polaco, latin hip-hop stars who hadnt recorded together in years. Alongside Star-Dome production, the album also has production by Rafy Mercenario (el rey del marroneo), DJ Urba and the Mambo Kingz, who are well known as producers on Daddy Yankees album.
