Fashion trends may come and go, but Florida's Iced Earth has remained steadfastly committed to championing the cause of heavy metal through thick and thin. After years of laboring in obscurity and undergoing countless lineup changes, they have slowly emerged as one of the greatest hopes for classic metal in America.
Originally formed as Purgatory by guitarist Jon Schaffer in 1984, the band spent five years in a constant state of flux while paying their dues on the Florida live circuit. They slowly honed their sound by combining '80s thrash influences with the classic metal approach of Iron Maiden. Their 1988 Enter the Realm demo was an underground favorite, and after changing their name to Iced Earth, the band recorded their eponymous 1990 album with a lineup consisting of guitarists Schaffer and Randall Sawver, singer Gene Adams, bassist Dave Abell, and drummer Mike McGill.Further personnel changes saw the arrival of singer John Greely and drummer Richey Secchiari for 1991's Night of the Stormrider, an ambitious concept album which nevertheless fell on deaf ears. Disheartened, Greely decided to call it quits, but Iced Earth would re-emerge three years later with 1995's Burnt Offerings, released on Century Media Records, and featuring vocalist Matthew Barlow and drummer Rodney Beasley. Constant touring saw Barlow prove himself as the band's first reliable singer, and the band hit their stride with the following year's The Dark Saga. Despite the arrival of a new rhythm section (bassist Keith Menser and drummer Mark Prator), the album showcased the ever-improving consistency and quality of Schaffer and Sawver's songwriting, as well as excellent cover artwork from Spawn comic book creator Todd MacFarlane. So happy was the band with their current lineup that they returned to the studio in 1997 to re-record the best of their early material with Barlow on vocals, resulting in the appropriately titled Days of Purgatory collection. Schaffer also decided to relocate Iced Earth to Indiana for "strategic reasons," prompting the departure of longtime cohort Sawver before the first sessions of 1998's Something Wicked This Way Comes. The album repeated the successful formula of its predecessors, and with new guitarist Larry Tarnowski and new bassist James MacDonough in tow, the band embarked on their most ambitious American and world tour yet. Their performances in Greece (one of the band's largest markets) yielded the double album Live in Athens, released in 1999. Horror Show appeared in summer 2001. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide
ILL BiLL is the realness, everyone respects BiLL. He has been through a lot and has always repped it, whether keeping it gully in the projects, cracking promoters in the mouth on tour with the Beatnuts, or influencing alot of your favorite rappers on the low, his time for HUGE SUCCESS IS COMING! Bill is Necro's older brother by 4 years, and has been doing music since a teenager, playing bass and doing lead vocals in the deathmetal band, Injustice. At the same time Bill was writing metal songs about Satan, he was crafting his rhyme skills, getting jocked by every thug in the projects for his skill. I remember kids would run whole blocks to catch up with Bill just to show love and that was in '89. Back then you could catch Bill rocking full fronts (a whole bridge of gold teeth) with fitted hats and $300 polo shirts when NO WHITE KIDS WERE spitting rhymes in the middle of Bed Stuy or earning props in the streets, not online behind a fucking computer but in the gutter along with his little brother Necro, the two would go everywhere.Chuck ChillOut wanted to sign Bill in '91 but the deal he offered was so wack he couldn't do it. We had gotten our hands on this book called, "All You Need To Know About The Music Business", written by Janet Jackson's lawyer, Donald Passman, and that was it!We wouldn't let anyone fuck us in the game, it was probably a blessing, cuz if we hadn't gotten that book we might have gotten signed and ruined our careers instead of starting our own labels.ILL BiLL owns Uncle Howie Records which is his own record label, but he records on the side for Necro's label, Psycho+Logical-Records. Necro is one of the dopest producers in the game and Bill's brother so recording for Psycho+Logical- is a natural move, just as natural as Necro producing shit for Bill's label.ILL BiLL is set to drop his debut solo album on Psycho+Logical-, titled, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH BILL?" and it is already being hailed a classic before it has dropped from all the leaked tracks. Bill rhymes about anything you can think of in a dopeway, whether kicking violent rhymes, rhymes about his life, freestyle battle shit, original concepts and topics, or metaphorical shit with meaning, politics, aliens, and story telling. Bill is just as good as any rapper out in the game and blows away 95% of them, which is why he will be a legend in the game. To some he is already an underground legend, but Bill is out for more than just underground respect, he wants the fucking world and everything in it. You ask WHAT IS WRONG WITH BILL? you might find out the hard way with a bloody mouth and broken nose if you ever disrespect this veteran, YOU FUCKING BITCHES!!
Goretex is a sick fuck, he still lives in the projects (Glenwood Projects-Flatbush/Canarsie area), after 30 years he still calls piss filled elevators and bullet hole filled doors his home. He rhymes from a perspective of someone on dust, coming up with some shit that nobody in the hiphop game could think of. That's what makes him so ill, he is original and in his own world of Goretex. He doesnt even listen to hiphop, he listens mostly to blackmetal, hardcore, rock, thrash, deathmetal, and obscure 70's shit. Gore has been down since day one in the triad known as Necro, ILL BiLL, & Goretex. (Goretex & Bill were best friends) All growing up in Glenwood when Decepticons ran wild and beef was at every corner. Goretex has always been on point when it comes to the ill shit and has always clicked with Necro mentally when it comes to obscure records and bands with moogs, playing Axelrod basslines, with funky drum kits played by drummers with afros.Gore and Necro would sit for hours listening to loop tapes, almost competing with each other to see who had the illest shit. This year you get to hear years of sickness and love for the art make its way to your ears, in the form of Goretex's debut, "THE ART OF DYING". Just look at the cover, that shit is next level, if you don't get it, you're not ready yet!
Necro claims to have started rapping when he was 11. However his rare demo's and freestyles album only feature tracks from as early as 1991. Necro had a bad childhood as he an brother Ill Bill also a member of Non Phixion grew up in a rough part of Brooklyn where their father was a violent angry man so they had to live with their heroin addicted Uncle named Howie who also appeared in the I Need Drugs Video which was extremly controvecial. Necro started his music career as a guitarist in a death metal band where he supported Big Names such as Sepultura but after hearing nothing but Hip-Hop in his neighbourhood ill Bill started to rap with his freind Goretex and soon Necro started. Necro became a very good producer helping artists such as Cage, The Arsonists, Non Phixion before starting his own record label Psycho+Logical Records and releasing his debut album which was a collection of his old hits thrown together called
I Need Drugs. I Need Drugs Quickly became an Underground Success and so did Necro. Necro then started to release cd's of his old demo's and freestyles simply called Rare Demo's and Freestyles he released 3 volumes following an Instrumental Album. A Year Later Necro released Gory Days which did not have as much promotion as I Need Drugs but still became a popular cd in the underground rap world featuring now infamous tracks like Dead Body Disposal, Gory Days, Circle Of Tyrants and All Hotties Eat The Jizz. WIth Non Phixion's album coming out soon after Psycho+Logical record s started to take off after This Unbeleivable album which was not a Psycho+Logical production but all members of Non Phixion were part of Psycho+Logical and it launced their underground careers. Necro released The Gory Days Instrumental CD and the year after is where he got busy bringing out Ill Bill - The Early Years, 2 album's, mechandise and also a porn movie. The first album Brutality Part 1 was a Brutal style of horror-core rap featuring songs from Mr. Hyde, Goretex, Necro, Ill Bill. This Album in my eyes is fantastic as it proves just how well Necro and Ill Bill work together as a duet in White Slavery, Reign In Blood and Our Life which is a fantastic song which tells the story of their childhood. White Slavery was an extremly sadistic song about enslaving women. Another great song on this album is Street Veterans with Necro and Mr. Hyde. The Second Album was a mixed CD with Necro and Ill Bill called Necro and Ill Bill - Street Villains Volume 1 which the album was made up mainly of Freestyles there is some good songs on this one especially The Hump Off and the amazing freestyles by Necro and Bill. This Year should be Psycho+Logical's biggest year yet as Necro plans on bringing out ten albums the first batch of albums to hit the shelves are Mr. Hydes debut album Barn Of The Naked Dead, Goretex' debut album The Art Of Dying, Ill Bill - Whats Wrong With Bill and Sabac Red - Sabacolypse now. Necro has also said he his bringing out a brand new album this year as well as a Sexorcist Album which will concentrate on his porn raps as Brutality was based on his brutal raps.
When Hyde isn't cracking people in the head with snapple bottles, or punching cab drivers in the face, or taking Necro's back in street brawls, he is writing evil rhymes in his basement full of roaches.Mr. Hyde has been down with Necro for 7 years now, after meeting Necro outside of Nuyorican Poet's cafe during a Necro/Cage show in '97. He eventually got down when him and Necro realized they both shared a love for boxing and started training together in the Starret City Boxing gym (East NY), along with crew member Erez hustlerHyde has been boxing since a kid, and fought tons of amateur fights, and even fought the golden gloves where he did very well.He started making demos and perfecting his craft under Necro's tutelage, appearing on all of Necro's major releases to date. Representing Queens, NY expect to be destroyed by Hyde's debut album, "BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD", a dosage of low budget gore at its finest!
Sabac is real, real in the sense that he helps kids, speaks positive solutions, and represents change through action. He has been with the City Kids foundation for over 10 years helping kids from all over NY, sitting with them, listening to their problems, and helping them. He also does workshops and coalition in schools. He rhymes in the group Non-Phixion and has been doing his thing for years repping Brooklyn to the fullest. What makes Sabac dope is he reps "THE REVOLUTION" but he doesn't do it through "RACISM", but rather through facts, ideas for logical solutions and through a mentality supporting "EQUALITY", something that don't exist in hiphop right now.Sabac is not like all these fake ass racist wannabee revolutionaries that doesn't understand what it is to make "REAL CHANGE". Look out for "SABACOLYPSE - A CHANGE GON' COME", cuz shit is real right now, A CHANGE WILL FUCKING COME!!!!!! BITCHES!!
BIOGRAPHYBefore you start reading this bio, think about the words Non Phixion. Then think about the most real, bang you in the head with a sledgehammer-type moment you've ever experienced. Something that either hurt you or opened your eyes to reality. That's what Non Phixion are about. Read on...The year was 1995. Somewhere in Brooklyn, NY, after years of spitting rhymes solo and crossing each others paths, four former advisaries buried the hatchet. They combined their talents and made history. ILL BILL, Goretex, Sabac Red and DJ Eclipse formed Non Phixion and jumped directly in the studio. Within six months, they released their debut single, "Legacy" b/w "No Tommorow" followed by an onslaught of critically acclaimed 12" singles that have sold over 100,000 copies combined. From it's earliest stages, the group possessed it's own unique style that is best distilled to "b-boy gangster meets futuristic world of apocalypse". A complex blend of opposites is at the core of the Non Phixion sound. Not since Wu Tang's heyday has hip-hop witnessed such a display of unity and strength. Non Phixion has three distinct flows, three different voices and three different types of lyrical content, yet they all compliment each other in an impressive and powerful way. After 2 years signed to Geffen Records yielded nothing, Non Phixion continued releasing music independently and began touring the world on their own. They've performed in all of NYC's major venues and done shows everywhere. Some of the places that have witnessed Non Phixion live include Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Las Vegas, Philly, San Diego, Atlanta, Toronto, Amsterdam, London, Oslo, Milan, Zurich, Copenhagen and Berlin. Some of the groups they have shared the stage with include Gangstarr, RunDmc, Gza, Mos Def, Blackmoon, Pharoahe Monch, The X-ecutioners, Big Pun and Fat Joe, Necro, The Beatnuts, Jurassic 5, El-P, Dead Prez & the Roots. Non Phixion have earned themselves a dedicated fanbase across the United States, Europe and Japan.April 23, 2002: After solidifying a world-wide cult following and releasing countless 12" singles over the past 7 years, Uncle Howie Records finally released Non Phixion's highly anticipated debut LP, "The Future Is Now". Along with the assistance of legendary producers DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Large Professor, "The Future Is Now" features guest appearances from Beatnuts, MF Doom and the nefarious Necro. In Addition, rockers Christian Olde Wolbers & Raymond Herrera from Fear Factory and Deftones guitarist Steph Carpenter get down as well. In the short 9 months since it's release, the album has sound-scanned close to 30,000 units in the US and sold over 60,000 units worldwide. As Non Phixion begins collecting beats for their upcoming sophmore LP, Uncle Howie Records releases the "ILL BILL Is The Future" mix CD. This CD features all of ILL BILL's rare & out-of-print 12" singles, various guest appearances and some never-heard-before unreleased songs & freestyles. "The DVD Is Now", Non Phixion's first DVD will hit stores in Spring 2003 along with the first volume in the "Green CD" series of Non Phixion retrospective LPs. With solo projects being worked on by every member of the group, 2003 will be a busy year for Non Phixion. More to come...
Considered the premiere symphonic dark metal band in North America, Vesperian Sorrow's music evokes the darkest depths of searing human tragedy juxtaposed with soaring heights of orchestrated symphonic melody.Their undeniable songwriting and passion sets them apart in their genre. In addition to two full-length albums released by Holland's Displeased Records, Vesperian Sorrow has been featured on two compilation albums. Since their inception in 1998, they have played shows and festivals in Germany, Canada, Mexico, and most of the states in the US.Vesperian Sorrow are living proof of the spirit of Symphonic Metal, complimenting and challenging each genre their music touches with power and unfailing intensity.
Although the name DEMONOID might be new within the metal scene, most of the guys involved are old stagers in the business. In fact, DEMONOID is nothing else but a project that features THERION members Christofer Johnsson and Kristian Niemann, Johan Niemann and former SOILWORK current CHIMAIRA drummer Rickard Evensand. Influenced by Old School Death and Thrash, the band plays solid, aggressive and pushing metal - a feast for every headbanger who's into brutal and violent sounds! So don't expect bombastic THERION-like metal but a true Death massacre! The idea of making a project playing more brutal music had been in the mind of Kristian Niemann, the guitar player of THERION, for a long time. There were earlier attempts to put something together, along with his brother Johan, but by some reasons it never ended up as a finished record. So when the idea was brought up again - this time together with a third companion from THERION, Christofer Johnsson, and the drummer who was working with THERION at that time, Rickard Evensand (later in SOILWORK, now in CHIMAIRA) - the attempts finally ended up with a finished record, later named "Riders Of The Apocalypse". The musical concept of DEMONOID is not symphonic metal like THERION, in fact the band strived to go back in time and create a fresh and challenging combination of basically old school Death and violent Thrash Metal elements, also mingled with a touch of modern Black Metal. Both Kristian and Johan have gotten into the more brutal forms of metal quite lately and some of their references are CRADLE OF FILTH and DIMMU BORGIR, while Christofer - having been the growler of THERION in earlier days - has extended knowledge of the thrash and death scene from late 80's and early 90's. Thus bands like SLAYER and BATHORY as well as all the Old School Death Metal bands from those the early times rank among his main references. Those facts create a very interesting combination, featuring Kristian's more than excellent guitar work, Christofer's by far best vocal performances up to now, Richard's technical drumming and Johan's pounding bass lines. Most of the music was written by Kristian and Johan, some minor help came from Christofer. As the captain of this ship, Kristian has been the main person responsible with arranging the songs and also doing most of the recordings in THERION's very own "Modern Art" studio. The lyrical concept was created by Christofer: A story which is partly fantasy and partly based on theological and historical elements. It circles around the biblical characters, "The Riders Of The Apocalypse". So if you like Old School Death / Thrash with sophisticated lyrics, "Rides Of The Apocalypse" is the right choice for you. With DEMONOID, the extreme metal scene has an 'old' new bright spot!
Annals of annihilation
What is there to say about CHILDREN OF BODOM that hasn’t been said yet? That they have the songs AND the skill? That very few come even close to what C.O.B. is doing? That they ARE state of the art? In the last six or so years, the band that darted to international fame with their debut, 1997’s ‘Something Wild’, has gone from being “this amazing band from Finland†to a household name in the metalscene. And that, of course, is obvious given the intensity, sheer quality of their material and the flawless execution. Make no mistake, CHILDREN OF BODOM do not play around. They’re here to kill.
Pathways to murder, short course
It didn’t take long for Spinefarm Records to figure out what they had in their hands when the band presented their demo to the label back in late 1996. Three spins of ‘Deadnight Warrior’ later, the bands was signed and ready to knock a few heads off... Soon enough (-97), C.O.B. was flying all over Europe and writing new material that would become the ‘Hatebreeder’ album. The band also did an incredibly successful mini-tour of Japan and recorded an airtight live album in Tokyo. The buzz around the COBHC was reaching new heights...
Gold-plated carnage
Finland has for years been a fantastic breeding ground for metal music. The fact that CHILDREN OF BODOM’s all four singles have been ..1 in the Finnish single-charts and breached the limit for gold record-status, only goes to prove this. The single for ‘Hate Me!’ even went as far as platinum.Apocalypse. Now.
After recording ‘Follow The Reaper’ at Peter Tägtgren’s infamous Abyss Studio, the band decided to return to the loving arms of a COBHC trustee, Anssi Kippo, and the bowels of Astia Studio. The result is nothing short of breathtaking. Not only has the band taken their songwriting into new levels of aggressivity and heaviness but the way the songs are carried out pummels everything they -or anyone, for that matter- have done into dust. Alexi Laiho spits out his lyrics with vitriolic hate, the guitars (courtesy of Alexi and Alexander Kuoppala) shred everything in their wake with razor-sharp precision while the rhythmsection (the demolition duo of Henkka T. Blacksmith & Jaska W. Raatikainen) pounds away like the world is about to end. As a final coup de gracé come the keyboards of Janne Warman, making sure the path of destruction is complete with the fervour and precision of a seasoned executioner on a killing spree.
Forming in the small German town of Krefeld, Blind Guardian perfected a fusion of Gothic- and fantasy-tinged European power metal with the velocity and technical precision of speed metal. Members Hansi Kürsch (vocals, bass), Marcus Siepen (guitar), André Olbrich (guitar), and Thomas Stauch (drums) initially called themselves Lucifer's Heritage, but elected to change when a 1986 demo tape began to achieve underground popularity. They signed with the No Remorse label and issued Battalions of Fear in 1988, following it with Follow the Blind a year later, which helped make a name for the band in Japan. 1990's Tales from the Twilight World became an underground hit in Germany and led to a deal with that country's division of Virgin Records; their major-label debut, Somewhere Far Beyond, was released in 1992. After 1993's live Tokyo Tales, Blind Guardian hooked up with former Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen for 1995's Imaginations from the Other Side. 1996's The Forgotten Tales was a collection of covers and alternate versions, setting the stage for 1998's Nightfall in Middle-Earth, a Tolkien-inspired concept album which finally became the band's first American release a year later. Century Media began reissuing portions of the band's back catalog in the U.S. the same year. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
Demons & Wizards is a new project featuring Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth and Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian. Combining the heavy crunch and dark melodies of Iced Earth with the powerful vocals and bombastic choirs of Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards sounds just like a combination of those two excellent bands, and at the same time, creates something entirely unique.
Jon and Hansi have been both friends and fans of each other's work for many years, and have long wanted to create some music with each other. They've finally managed to squeeze some time out of their busy schedules with their own bands to create a whole album together.AND COMMIN SOON THE NEW DEMONS AND WIZARDS ALBUM DROPS LATE JUNE 2005
