Growing up, Point Blanc didnt always have the cool sneakers or the Nike jerseys. As his father struggled to put food on the table, Nicholas Ong dreamed the impossible dream. The Malaysian English music industry was virtually non-existent, but Nicholas Ong wanted to be a rapper.Young and talented, the 15 year old kid from Ipoh formed his own high school rap group, performing at various school events and relentlessly auditioning for shows like 1990s talent show Asia Bagus. He never once faltered in his determination to make it as a recording artiste.
The fateful day arrived when Nicholas Ong saw a tiny ad in the classifieds of the New Straits Times Wanted: Rappers to form a Hip-hop group. Gathering his nerve, 16 year old Nicholas Ong rode his bicycle to the nearest payphone the next day to answer the ad. Dialling Kuala Lumpur, he proceeded to do the first solo audition of his life- over the phone. Through initially doubtful about this Chinese Ipoh kid who said he wanted to be a rapper, Yogi B knew he had his man when Nicholas started to beat box.He was soon on a bus to Kuala Lumpur to sign his first recording contract. Leaving behind relatives and friends who shook their heads in disapproval, 16 year old Nicholas Ong began his life in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. He spent his days in school and his nights in the studio. The rest, as they say, is history. In 1996, Point Blanc was born and Poetic Ammo was critically acclaimed, becoming the first Malaysian hip hop group to break into the mainstream. Everybody wanted in on the hip hop boom and lucrative endorsement deals with Nike, Adidas, Coca-Cola, Digi, Swatch and Ford soon followed. Poetic Ammo became one of the biggest names in local hip-hop, touring the country and even playing live shows in London and Hong Kong.Winning numerous AIM Awards with Poetic Ammo including the much coveted Best Local English Album, Point and his creative team also picked up AIM awards for Best Album Cover. Poetic Ammo swept the nation, becoming bigger than anyone had ever dreamed possible for a local English act. That 16 year old Ipoh kid was living his dreams and proving everyone wrong. After proving himself as a talented artiste and designer, he extended his talents by manufacturing rap rock boy band, Pop Shuvit. Point conceptualised and cultivated the bands skater rap rock image to the last detail. He ensured that the concept was carried through in all elements from the band name, personal style and stage personality to the music. Securing the band its first record deal, Pop Shuvit became an instant success.
Following the release of Poetic Ammos last album, Return of tha Boombox, Point took a 2 year hiatus from the music industry. The local hip hop scene had come a long way and it was looking good. It was time for him, and Poetic Ammo, to take a break after being at the forefront of the local music scene for the last decade. For the past two years, Point has been expanding his repertoire of skills to include game development, team and event management, marketing communications and public relations through work with game development company, MYGO.Though the core members of Poetic Ammo, Point Blanc and Yogi B, are currently taking time out for individual pursuits, Poetic Ammo is still very much alive. There are new projects in the pipeline, and fans can expect to hear about some of these ventures in the near future.2005 marked the beginning of Voyeur Records, Point Blancs own record label and artiste management company. Planning to break more new ground in the Malaysian music industry, Point is currently working on his first solo effort, due out mid of 2006. Watch this space for updates...
