Whether you realise it or not, for the majority of people involved in the UK urban music world, at some point your ears have been blessed by the sounds of NEEKO……Starting his journey at youth club raves and local house parties at the tender age of 14, DJ Friction (as he was known at the time) found his sounds and his charisma rapidly earned him the reputation as one of the most talked about DJ’s around. Within two years his musical talents had expanded, and he turned his talent to the art of the M.C. Being a young and success hungry individual and being constantly exposed to the new and exciting music that was ’Garage’, DJ Friction grasped all opportunities that came his way and by the time he reached the age of 18 felt it was the time to amalgamate his talents.Alongside a number of other individuals who were all passionate about the garage scene, DJ Friction found himself to be part of ‘Mad Daag’ crew and they soon began hosting their own events at Club Phoenix in North London. Although the time with ‘Mad Daag’ was relatively short lived, the affiliations and connections that were made, were to prove to be a successful story. DJ Friction and Ozzie B made the decision to leave the crew and go it alone, and so became the ‘Specialist Crew’ along with Friction X-Rated and Silver Fox. The time with ‘Specialist Crew’ brought more experience to all involved and once again the affiliations and the decisions that were made, meant that it was time to move on again.It was at this point that a whole new status was to be found and DJ Friction became NEEKO. Alongside MC Ozzie B and DJ Crucial B (and unbeknown to them all at the time) one of the most successful crews of its time was to be born………MORE FIRE CREW!Neeko initially began with what he knew best and found his place within the crew as DJ. With the departure of L.M.C, Neeko then took the opportunity to be alongside Ozzie B as MC, whilst DJ Crucial B was appointed to grace the decks. Within a small space of time, ’More Fire Crew’ began hosting a number of regular radio slots including AMY FM 90.8 and KLIMAXX FM 92.9.At the departure of KLIMAXX FM, so came the departure of Crucial B, however this did not stop the passion behind the founders of the MORE FIRE CREW and they were soon back on the airwaves of FRESH F.M with a new DJ, Gappy Ryder. The crew took on every challenge in their path and at an MC competition hosted by HEARTLESS CREW, the two MC’s could not be separated in the finals, proving not only their worth and talent within the whole scene but also making a lot of established people aware of what MORE FIRE CREW were about to create!Following a guest appearance on FRESH FM, Lethal B became the next member of MORE FIRE and the crew moved to DÉJÀ VU FM 92.3. Appearances and events became more frequent and DJ Seanie B soon became the next recruit, making the crew five men strong. With status gaining strength at every turn, it wasn’t long before producer Nikki Slim Ting, took the crew to the studio and recording got under way. ’Haterz’ was recorded alongside Dream, Jookie Mundo and Charlie P, and soon came the anthem which was to bring them the nationwide success they had been working for! The crew were signed to ‘GO BEAT’ records and with the chart success of ’OI’ came the recognition of their talents by appearing on tv shows such as Top Of The Pops, Pepsi Chart and Popworld.It was not long after the successes came for the group that unforeseen financial circumstances with the label and disputes among the group members meant that MORE FIRE CREW were to go there separate ways. Neeko, being the original member, took the name of the crew with him and took some time to concentrate on family life and evaluate his musical future. In May 2004, Neeko became the proud father of a son and he soon found that with a world of responsibility came a whole new world of inspiration.Appearing in the BBC1 drama ‘Babyfather’, embarking on a solo career and working alongside ‘PIFF CITY’, The comeback single ’For My Son’ saw Neeko focus his talents and saw him taking his music and his career to new heights and to a different level of maturity. DJ Semtex championed the track and described it as ‘The biggest and realest track made that never made it to the shops’ and the video reached the Channel U play list. Since the track Neeko has recorded a second video focussing on the issue of safe sex entitled ‘Burning Feeling’ and has also recorded a video with PIFF CITY ALLSTARZ entitled ‘HOT STUFF’. All three videos are currently on rotation on Channel U and the comeback is well on course to make Neeko a worldwide name.
