I'm a recording engineer/producer in central Texas, just outside Austin. I work out of Fire Station Studios in San Marcos. Some of the recordings of which I am most proud are Juke Box Music by Doug Sahm, the Texas Tornados' first album, Homeland and Culture Swing by Tish Hinojosa, Totally Guacamole by Gary P. Nunn, Mudcat by Dr. G and the Mudcats and Bread & Wine by the Ash Family.
I'm also very grateful to have worked on the soundtrack for the Antone's - Home of the Blues DVD, with my buddy Bobby Arnold.
And, a long time ago in what seems like another era, I mixed B.W. Stevenson's last record, Rainbow Down the Road, with my friend Wink Tyler. If you can find a copy of that CD, you owe yourself a listen. If you don't know about Buck, you've missed out on the Voice.
I like tracking songs live, keeping overdubs to a minimum. When musicians are "in the groove," just put up some mikes and get out of the way... All of the recordings that I have made that won awards, sold well, or got the record deal were recorded that way. Of course, a lot of recordings that went nowhere were recorded that way, too...
I'm lucky to work at the Fire Station. We have a big room with a warm sound, and I can put a band in there together and just isolate the amps. Something magical can happen when players are making eye contact and feeling the drums. It's just big enough to do string sections with pleasing room ambience, but not so big that a combo gets lost. In fact, we just recorded some strings and woodwinds for Michael Martin Murphey's "Cowboy Christmas" album.
To all of my friends and musicians that I have recorded over the years, thanks for being part of my life. To anyone reading this that doesn't know me, follow your dreams!
more to come...
