About Me

INFO: ÜBER BÄNDI
Scroll down for English version

English version: ABOUT BÄNDI:
“Tango is the Finnish blues,” Finnish film maker Aki Kaurismäki once said. This quite wondrous and strange land of music has much more to offer than just its popular musical traditions such as “Humppa” and “Rokki”. A very different kind of tango has emerged: Finnish tango. Russian romantic tunes and German military marches are both essential compositional styles of Finnish tango – which today is the crucial ingredient to any great Finnish dancing, drinking and bonding event.
BÄNDI is the only German band that plays Finnish Tango and they do it with the same amount of passion as the Finns themselves – however, not without adding their very own special touch. BÄNDI combines the traditional Finnish doleful, but catchy tunes of the Forties, Fifties and Sixties with bossa nova, blues, rumba and country elements: moaning violins flirt with jazzy drums and the gentle elfish voice of Pilvet Karkaa. E-guitar riffs nestle against sad sounding tenors and thus create the perfect soundtrack for anybody in love. Crazy listening – and a top-quality cultural exchange.
It all began with a trip to the Baltic Sea from Turku to Stockholm. Drummer and artist Thomas Salzman had the pleasure to meet the beautiful Finnish girl Anna: blonde, always in a good mood and very well built. She sang a lovely song for him which touched him deeply and would not let him go for the rest of his life - the passion of Finnish tango finally got him. Full of spirits, he managed to gather a small group of like-minded people in less than a decade: BÄNDI. Singer Kristina Debelius, the band’s beautiful face and smoky-elegant voice adds her very own charm to Finnish tango. Singer Tobias Frisch shows his unique skills by conveying the great era of tenors to the intimate atmosphere of a club with a good amount of irony and jauntiness. The jazzy, Southern American drum sounds of Thomas Salzmann complement the virtuosic guitar playing of Volker Denkel and the skilfully mastered string bass of Johannes Kramer.
So that’s exactly why BÄNDI wants to hit number on the Finnish charts. Oh, and by the way: BÄNDI is Finnish for band.
THE PRESS THINKS ABOUT BÄNDI

About the CD:
You just have to look at the CD cover in order to know that this is not a typical tango production. No legs wrapped in fishnet stockings or other twisted bodily parts, no embraced dance couples or obscure streets. Not at all, here we see two jaunty elks dancing. Satumaa is at the same time melancholic and jolly. It is a mix of tango, and march, country, jazz and a lot more. Kristina Debelius (voice, stage piano, organ), Volker Denkel (western guitar & electric guitar), Thomas Salzmann (drums, percussion), Tobias Frisch (voice, violin, kazoo) and Johannes Kramer (double-bass) catch their audience with this mixture and they don’t let go. Willingly, we listen to the sighs from the bottom of Kristina’s heart and to her somehow husky voice, even if we don’t understand any Finnish. Please listen to this:
