About Me

My name is Shana, and I'm a homebirthing, breastfeeding, baby-wearing, co-sleeping, respectful parenting, whole food eating, crunchy wife and mama.
I live for my wonderfully artistic husband, David, and two amazing daughters, Eva and Esme. I have a BA in Integrated Language Arts from Wright State University, I am a certified postpartum doula, and I am proud to be a student midwife. As for my day-job, I work for my favorite bookselling company, which I LOVE!
When I can spare the time, I am often found dawdling in web design, drumming, and knitting. When Esme was born, David and I had over 10 wonderful weeks off work together with the girls, and since then, we have developed an embarrassing addiction to board games. Above all else, though, I enjoy spending time with and encouraging my three true loves—especially by admiring (and inspiring, so I have been told) David’s artwork, playing cards with Eva, and wearing Esme.
As a lifestyle choice, I am dedicated to green-living and natural parenting. I live to preserve the earth, enjoy nature, and live a healthy lifestyle; as a conscious effort to support that convention, my family is vegetarian, we eat mostly whole foods, we cloth diaper, we recycle a good portion of our waste, and we buy most of our necessities second-hand, from WAHMs, and from local markets.
Not only do I live for my fantastic family, I also love, adore, and spoil our wonderful pets: three dogs: Sandy (Yellow Lab), Minnie (Blue-tick Coonhound), and Sonny (English Mastiff); two cats: Snickers (Siamese/Angora mix) and Little Wookie (Maine Coon); and two snakes: Louie & Neil. You can often find me and the family walking the pups along Lake Michigan.

I'd like to meet:

Friends, old and new, especially those I have lost contact with.

Livin' life:

4/14: Two new words: "Help!" and "Florida"
4/13: She started saying her "D" sound today! So now she says "Daddy" and "dog" clearly!!
4/7: Esme blew a kiss to my mom on the way out today! And tooth number 13 has made an appearance!
4/1: Esme says a slew of words, including: ball, shoes, Eva, go, thank you, here you go, apple, orange, Dada, Mama, Papa, Maui, baby, uh-oh, bye-bye, woof-woof, kitty... the list goes on!
3/21: Sarah taught Esme how to high-five!
3/20: She's waving and saying "Hi!"
3/10: Esme turned one today!
2/25: I looked in Esme's mouth today, and she has at least one molar tooth pushing through her little gum.
2/24: She walked around at lunch clutching a slice of sweet yellow bell pepper. She wandered with this new best friend for a good 30+ minutes without even trying to eat it. So funny!
2/11: Esme dumped Eva's memory game on the floor, then when I said, "Pick it up, she took a little bucket and filled it with most of the cards, one by one.
2/7: Esme's saying Baby, Get it, Ball, and Go!
2/3: She's walking everywhere, slowly but deliberately.
1/21: Esme pulled up my shirt to nurse!
1/16: She says "Boo!" and barks at Minnie... "Wooh! Wooh! Wooh!" and then she laughs like crazy!
1/10: She's walking six, seven, eight steps before she falls over! She's also ten months old today!
12/30: Esme's clapping and dancing when we sing "If you're Happy & You Know It" and doing "So Big!" 12/22: She played peek-a-boo by hiding her face in the inside of my elbow and peeking out!
12/21: Esme took her first steps today! I missed it, but David was the lucky one.
12/15: She *finally* said "Dad" today! It was adorable! David walked into the room and I said to Esme, who was in the sling, "It's Dada!" And she said "Da!" She was so surprised that she hid her head in my armpit and she acted all coy!
12/12: Esme does the sign for milk!
12/9: She says, "Uh-oh" when she drops something. Usually, it just comes out, "Uh--," but sometimes she remembers the "-oh" :-)
12/1: Esme waves "Hi!" and "Bye!"
11/15: Esme repeats the sounds that I make to her, especially words like Mama, Bye-bye (or Buh-buh), and Mohkie (or Moh) for milk. We're working on Dada (she cannot quite get the D) and Eva (she says Wuh). 11/06: Esme is giving kisses now, and making kissy noises.
10/19: She has another tooth on the bottom, which makes four, and the top four are working their way through now, too!
10/07: Esme called me "Mama"! She also got into a standing position without holding on to anything, all by herself!
10/04: She's waving when you say, "Hiiiiiii!"
09/30: Esme is everywhere! REAL crawling! Goes from Crawling to sitting! Pulling herself up!
09/25: Esme has tooth #3, next to her bottom front on her left side!
09/20: She's babbling! "Bababa," "Yayaya," "Gagaga"--three syllables at a time, usually!
09/19: Esme crawled! to Eva, who was playing with her own toys on the floor... :-D
09/5: Esme weighs 18 pounds!
09/3: Esme's been scooting around on her tummy, pushing herself this way and that to reach toys and climb into my lap!
09/2: When I got home from work, Esme heard me say hello, and immediately started crying for me. She had not even seen me yet!
08/27: Esme looks around when someone says her name!
08/25: 2nd tooth!
08/15: She's sitting on her own now without toppling over!
08/14: 1st tooth!!!
08/13: She got up on all fours all by herself when I put her on her tummy!
08/11: Esme now looks down when she drops something!
08/2: Esme cried when I took a spoon away from her. Now she sometimes gets upset if we remove something she was playing with...
07/16: She's razzing!
07/6: Esme rolled over, twice! She also plays with her feet all the time now, too!
06/25: Esme just cleared off my desk, including two CD cases, three pens, a stack of papers, a calculator, her binky and my phone. I guess I'll just have to work with her on cleaning off the floor now...
06/23: Esme now reaches out to me and Daddy when we walk by, as if to say: "Pick me up!" She also lets out huge belly-laughs. She's also almost sitting up all by herself, and almost rolling over!
06/11: After intensely watching it for several moments, Esme grabbed my soup bowl and pulled! She plays with nusing necklaces and shakers all the time now!
05/23: Ok, I just love Esme's boppin' feet when she gets excited, like when she knows mama-milk is coming, or when big sis tells her dramatic stories!
05/17: I noticed today that when I hold Esme in front of the mirror, she smiles and coos at the cute baby reflected there!
05/13: Esme weighed in at 11 pounds, 4 ounces!
04/10: At four weeks, Esme smiled for the first time (meaning that it was not gas)!

Esme, tickled by Daddy, 05/2007

04/01: I taught Eva how to weave today! :-)
03/31: Eva made her very first scrapbook for a school project! It was a timeline of her life thus far.
03/08: Eva discovered Indiana Jones this weekend!
02/24: Eva bumped an upper tooth looser--it'll fall out any day now!
11/08: Eva is reading Level One and Beginning Readers all by herself!
10/01: Eva read her first story today! BY HERSELF!!!
09/17: Eva and I set a goal for Eva to be reading independently in 6 weeks. We've got some hard work ahead of us!
06/14: Eva lost her second tooth!
05/28: Eva lost her first tooth today!
