About Me

ENGLISH:Zani was born in the U.S. of Latin/Native American roots. At the age of 7 her family moved to Pernambuco, Brazil. Surrounded by the pulsating Afro-Brazilian rhythms and lush melodies, it was there that her passion for singing and dancing was sparked. " I was born in the U.S., but my soul was born in Brazil", says Zani. After returning to the U.S. at age 11, her musical evolution continued, taking her through many genres such as Gospel, Jazz, Blues, Classical and Choral music. Though Zani was very capable and comfortable within this variety of styles, she chose to focus on the music that had such a deep impact on her life as a child, Afro-Brazilian music. In 2000, while living in Los Angeles, Zani began studying W.African drumming and joined a Brazilian percussion ensemble. By chance she met up with Prince Diabate (master Kora player and singer from guinea Conakry) and he invited her to join his band as backing vocalist. Of that experience, Zani says "singing and performing with Prince was an amazing opportunity and an experience I will always cherish. He (his music) opened my mind and pushed my musical boundaries to a level just beyond my reach." For Zani, part of developing her own sound has centered around her deep desire to explore who she is naturally as a vocalist. She continues learning both from formal vocal training and from listening to traditional/indigenous music from many different cultures

Music is my religion. The studio is my temple. I sing, chant, dance and worship daily.
