Cole Minor was born Robert Cole Paterson on December 3rd, 1981 to a family of artists and musicians. His mother, a singer, performed on stage while Cole was still developing in her womb. You could say music was instilled in him from the start.
Cole was never the most academic person in the world. He couldnt concentrate during class and spent most of his time joking around and entertaining his friends. As one teacher put it "Cole has a very large voice, and he likes to use it". Little did they know that those jokes and that voice would help define who Cole is as an artist today. Cole possesses street smarts that have helped him get to where he is today, and the lessons he has learned in life up till now are reflected in his rhymes.
Growing up Cole loved drawing and he was encouraged to explore his creative side. Inspired by comic book super heroes and villains he would spend hours drawing and trying to hone his artistic skills. Little did he know he would soon be painting pictures with words instead of brushes.
As a teenager in the 90's Grunge era Cole was a fan of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and also older bands such as Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. However he was soon turned onto the hip hop genre by a friend and his love of the music grew from there. Cole discovered his own rapping chops at the age 15 after a friend dared him to write a rhyme while the two were cutting class. Writing his first rap felt natural to him and many more followed. It soon became an obsession and Cole found himself studying his favorite artists rhyme styles (but not biting).
Not satisfied with just rapping over other peoples beats Cole began concocting his own. Combining a drum machine he bought off one of his friends and a midi synth module that his dad used with his keyboard Cole began experimenting like a mad scientist. After a few months Cole began churning quality beats that he could flow on.
At 16 Cole moved to Hayward, California (in the east Bay Area, about 15 minutes outside of Oakland) with his mom. He would stay there for the next 5 years where he finished high school and eventually got into graphic design. While still developing his music Cole began working for a friend doing album design work for many successful bay artists (see portfolio). At this point Cole had upgraded from the beat machine to a Korg Triton keyboard and had produced beats and done guest appearances for various artists.
upon Cole's work visa expiring he decided it was time to move back to Canada, he had two brothers living in Vancouver so he moved back up the coast. Once in Vancouver he continued doing freelance design work for various artists back in California and around the world via the internet. In 2007 began to work with local artists for the first time since moving back to Canada.
After a long road with its share of side steps Cole is currently in the studio working on his self titled debut album, its scheduled to drop in 2009.
