This is a fangrrrl space dedicated to the SLUGS who played raw, old school punk with a sick r&b twist from 1977 until.....whenever. Like many bands who give their hearts and souls to rock & roll, the SLUGS were factory boys who talked the talk and walked the walk. Originally from Long Island and Queens, the Slugs played out often and everywhere; at My Father's Place, Right Track Inn, Sparks, the Rock Pub, Max's Kansas City, Continential, Hurrah's, Nightingale, and the late great CBGB's. Sometimes the SLUGS booked shows as the CorpseGrinders, with Rick Rivets on guitar. Rivets was a founding member of the NY DOLLS, with Johnny Thunders and Arthur "Killer" Kane. But the SLUGS songwriting team of Lenny and Ray is what made them my favorite band. Back in the dark ages, when Southern Rock ruled the turnpikes and roadscapes of Lawn Guyland, I met the Slugs at a party and I never left. I started out as a girlfriend, and eventually became a music writer and cultural sociologist. So you see, ya can't learn everything at school. Thanks to Teddy B. and Benny for many great photos, and to all SLUGS, CorpseGrinders and friends, for giving us something to do and a reason to live.
