Kelvyn a person who produces music who likes a bit of a rant and is pretty anal when it comes to potential... its in all of us. I believe there is a dualistic aspect to life where on the one side our goals are confused and therefore compromised by personality/trauma /idealism/lack of knowledge/fear etc and on the other side an existential reality outside of ourselves that informs the subjective opinion. Many of us never question instinct or our gut reaction to a situation believing in a kind of mythological truth that excludes the possibilty of reason. I have seen a lot of people trapped in a vacuum of self belief relying on their instinct which denies their potential.... I am a composer working with musicians, some it would seem love to run round in circles... repetition not innovation when I confront their comfort zone with the idea of next level thinking the cracks start to appear and personal taste becomes such an issue that the idea of putting ones self in a strange context and making it their own is simply too abstract. If things are'nt wrapped up in a genre people seem to get confused. Look at music today, everthing is packaged in a way so as to make it easy to consume. this is fine but life is a little more multi dimensional than that. We have a lot of levels but each level is clearly delineated, furniture on one level electronic goods on another our thinking has become deparmentalised. I dream about Turkish rap with southern rock. Lynard Skynard remixed by Mousse T or Matmos, Mary J Blige with Gregorian Choirs, Björk with System Of A Down sound etc.... Jean Cocteau my hero theatre dance literature film he did it all innovation style and content and it was all brilliant.
I am one half of a group called Entity. We have some very individual sounding material which we have amassed over the years. We never played it to anyone as it was mainly a creative exercise. But last new years eve we where asked to perform some of the songs live, which we did in a beautiful theatre in the centre of Amsterdam ( have a look at the videos and photos) with twenty two musicians. Everybody had fun and it was great to realise through the enthusiasm of those who took part that our music actually has some merit and in a strange way has commercial potential. We have written a musical ( It's not as bad as it sounds) and are pitching the idea to various companies at the moment.... fingers crossed....
