At just 5'1, it's hard to believe that such a powerful voice could come out of Michelle Citrin. Take the honest lyrics of the Indigo Girls, mix in the deliciously smooth style of Norah Jones, throw in some dreadlocks, and you get Michelle Citrin - the "lil grrl, with a big sound."
Perhaps you recognize Michelle as the star of the hit Youtube video, "Rosh Hashanah Girl", or "20 things to do with Matzah" which to date, has received millions of hits, ranking in the top 20 most viewed music videos in both 2007 and 2008, sandwiched right between the music videos of Brittney Spears and Jennifer Lopez. Or perhaps you were dancing in a packed club, to Michelle's voice on the 2008, chart topping dance hit, "Turn it On" released on Vandit records.
Fully independent from any record label, Michelle has sold thousands of copies of her self-produced EP, Foursongsforyou. Her engaging live performances and insightful lyrics have garnered rave reviews and numerous accolades, including being named one of Billboard Music's "Top Songwriters, Great American Songwriting Honor, VH-1 Song of the Year finalist, 2006 Honorable Mention in the Be Heard Singer/Songwriter contest and a finalist in Sony Music's Future Rock Competition. Extensive touring across the United States, Australia, and Israel has resulted in a rapidly growing, devoted grassroots fan base.
From NYU to Berkeley, Michelle tours across the nation's colleges and universities and her songs can be heard on college campus and national public radio stations. Her captivating songs don't stop where the airwaves end. In May 2005, Michelle performed as a featured artist on Austin Music Television Network. Tracks from "Foursongsforyou" are featured on the soundtrack of several independent films, including 2003 NYC Film Festival best picture, "Wasteland", and are featured on the upcoming TV reality show "True Lives." Complementing her screen debut, Michelle's music video for her song "Dark Refrain" won first place at William Paterson University's annual film festival and took her to the 2001 Kudzu Film Festival.
Whether opening for pop star Michelle Branch or playing an intimate set at a coffeehouse in Melbourne, Australia, Michelle Citrin's soulful voice, skillful guitar playing, humorous in between song banter and unpretentious demeanor has captured the eyes and ears of her audience all over the world. Arlene McKanic of the Greenwich Village Gazette says, "the audience is left with the feeling that they're in the presence of someone who's doing exactly what she's meant to do." Michelle Citrin is living proof that size... really doesn't matter!
