About Me

Simply put, DJ Proe makes soul music. His ear for rare vintage material, wit, and perception eschew his 25 years of age. Proe is a musical personality who engenders everything good about hip-hop—his influences range from Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Pete Rock, Rodney Jerkins, J Dilla, and David Axelrod. You never know what to expect, but you are never disappointed. In a cultural landscape full of anthems that diminish the value of the listener, Proe’s sound resonates with positivity without being self-righteous. A native of East Orange, NJ, Proe is the product of a golden era in hip-hop and soul. With a sound reminiscent of artists like Pete Rock and Marley Marl, Proe’s tracks provide a sonic landscape for the stories of everyday people. At times hopeful and inspiring, at others brooding, each track is imbued with the energy, and edge of the street, the heart of hip-hop culture. Listen to the drums: one of the most distinguishing characteristics of hip-hop music, for Proe, a strong kick is the touchstone. As globally accessible as hip-hop itself, Proe does not envision a singular audience when creating a song. He makes music for any and everybody trying to make something of their lives, and leave goodness in their wake. To this end, he is most attracted to working with artists who are not afraid of pushing the envelope creatively. His talent displays not only the ablity to reach various audiences, but the ability to collaborate with various talents. His resume includes artists from Trech to Peedi Crack, J.R. Writer, and Freeway just to name a few. Hip hop was founded at the intersection of improvisation and discovery, so fittingly, Proe is quick to note that he began as a DJ, spinning at parties, and selling mix tapes at the age of twelve. Were it not for an old drum machine handed down from an old friend, he probably would not be producing right now. The best of hip-hop makes you move, physically or emotionally. Simply put, DJ Proe is the best of hip-hop.
