I'm a college student pursuing degrees in music education, clarinet performance, and psychology at Marshall University.
I am also a clarinetist and pianist in the 249th Army National Guard Band.
I have a 6 year commitment with the Guard serving in the band, and the great things are:
1) This band unit doesn't deploy, but volunteer deployments are available to those who do wish to deploy.
2) I get paid for every drill meet (one per month)
3) drill meet is basically playing music with the band - so I'm getting paid for what I love to do for 6 years.
4) The band is amazing, full of band directors, Mom's and Dad's, army sergeants, music majors.. and the kids still in high school.
5) The band plays at a higher level of musicianship than I'm usually exposed to.
6) The band allows you to sign out free top-of-the-line professional instruments and instrument accessories (mouthpieces, barrels, ligatures, reeds, etc.)
7) Even with the WV Promise Scholarship, the Guard will match the price of my college tuition, and will give me a bonus check for enlisting on a highly needed instrument (clarinet)!
If you're interested in joining the WV National Guard, whether for band or not, let me know. There are easily over a hundred different jobs in the Army and Army National Guard. If you are interested in the band, however, you'll need meet these specifications:
1) Skilled on your instrument (high chair all-county / all-state quality)
2) Audition on an instrument other than tuba (there's way too many in the band already!)
