You might not know her name, but I bet you recognize the face! Katie Barber has been a force in the entertainment industry since she made her debut w/the Carolina Ladybugs baton team at the ripe old age of 3. Her first parade was memorable as she marched down the street with her arms wide-open shouting, “Carry me, Momma, carry me!†After a short stint with the Ladybugs, she moved on to serious drama, including playing a sheep and Mary in her church’s Christmas pageants. Her break in the movies came when she was an extra in Whoopi's smash hit, Eddie in 96. Her in your face performance as a fan in a packed stadium was unfortunately cut due to time constraints. That fall at age 13, came her first stage play, “Romeo & Julietâ€, w/the Reidsville High School theater dept. She held her own beside more seasoned high school actors as she played the Apprentice to the Apothecary. She followed up the hit play w/â€Greaseâ€, playing a Teen Angel/Student. Her ability to hand jive left the critics speechless, and it was clear that she had been bitten by the acting bug. She continued to volunteer her time w/the RHS theater department throughout her high school career appearing in such plays as “A Christmas Carol†as “Belinda Cratchettâ€, “Little Shop of Horrors†as The Bag Lady 2, and in “Fame†as Marianne. Never formally trained in dance, she still shined shaking her stuff and left the audience smiling. She made her leading lady debut as M’Lynn in the ensemble drama “Steel Magnolias†during her senior year. This small town girl was just beginning to leave her mark. In the fall of 01, Katie began training w/acting coach, Deborah Kintzing. Then a mysterious two-year hiatus followed. Some biographers refer to it as The Dark Years. Some believe that she actually married Prince William in a secret ceremony, but the marriage was annulled due to his love for polo had come in the way of their marriage. She came out of hiding when Bon Jovi came to film “National Lampoons Pucked†in her hometown. Her performance was one of the most intense and memorable 5 seconds in the movie. All of this leads up to 05, which Katie views as the golden year in her career. In August, she played an extra on NBC’s “Surfaceâ€. She spent the day filming on a sunny beach in Fort Fisher, NC. It was an exciting opportunity and she enjoyed it seeing that she was feed for free, caught an awesome tan, and was able to spend most of the time reading. All of that, along w/being paid for it, led her to declare, “This is the best job ever!†Katie ended 05 by appearing in a commercial for Smith Stokes, and lending her comedic talent for the Miss Rockingham County Pageant. Guests at the Miss Rockingham County Pageant received a special treat when Miss Barber performed her first ever stand up routine. It was a success and left the crowd roaring with laughter.
