About Me
I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V3.6 !
SONA FARIQ formed in East London in 1996, the collective embodiment of four close musical friends. They released their first record, a 7", DR JOHN b/w SO PERFECT on the BLUEDOG indie label in 1996 and soon got a publishing deal with BMG in 1997, after which a 12", DO NOT RETURN, was put out on Sona's own label in 1998.
In 1999 the band signed to WEA records. One album entitled SONA FARIQ, produced and mixed by engineering genius and deadly black-belt, CHRIS SHELDON (Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Foo Fighters, to name just a few), and mastered by HOWIE WEINBERG, was released on WEA in 2000 to mass critical acclaim.
Rigorous touring throughout the UK and the European continent, further consolidated Sona's second-to-none live reputation, and quickly gave rise to a growing cult following. At a Sona gig you would expect to see a cross-section of society with a broad range of tastes that was unusual for this genre.
Though influenced by such luminaries as The Stooges, Bad Brains, Sly and Robbie, Funkadelic, Sonic Youth, Sly and the Family Stone, Dr John, Public Enemy, Asian and North African music, old-school hip-hop, sheer, unbridled spirit, and so much more.....Sona Fariq were recognised as having an unreplicable sound of their own.
The album itself was to become a treasured slice of rock history to those in the know. The band sadly split in 2003 while trying to find a deal for their second album, which was written but never released ~ a few demos and excerpts can be heard on this page.Friends of Sona may be interested to know that singer MIKE FRANKEL has started a new project, DEAD KIDS, currently making waves on the live circuit, you can check em out at myspace.com/youaredeadkids. SPIKE currently plays drums for the cult punk band, CONFLICT.
Meanwhile guitarist DOM BOUFFARD is in the throes of completing a solo album in his new hometown, Berlin, no doubt it will be as dark and mysterious as the man himself ~ see what he's up to by clicking the appropriate box below!
Meanwhile, bassist ABS has been busy co-forming the audio-visual project, FLOWERS OF SULPHUR, described by witnesses as "somewhere out~there", this new project takes in heavy acid rock, psychedelic electronica, films and visions, while managing to keep the whole lethal concoction down. Very HARDCORE.
