BUT STREETJAS The Freestyle Queen
Raw talent is a god given gift that some possess and others admire. It can be fleeting and fade as quick as an sunset, while other times it can be nurtured and harnessed for great use, like a fire. Its a special quality that draws people close, opens eyes and ears, inspires, empowers, and provokes change. JA$ is undoubtedly one of those people who possess that quality and rare talent. Fresh, determined, unique, and focused; when JA$ speaks, attention is demanded. More than just your typical around the way girl, she comes armed with a flow and style that captivates any and all who listen. Born in Jacksonville, Florida to young parents, JA$ dealt with the turmoil and unstableness of finding a place to call home. By age 9, her and her mother moved to New Jersey, bouncing from city to city and town to town. Though her parents never married and werent together, she maintained a relationship with her father. JA$ would spend countless hours listening to rap, r&b, and soul music with her father. He taught her to be tough and never back down, forcing her to fight and tackle her fears head on; this later proved to be qualities that would be driving forces in her life. Time spent with her father was stable but her home life was anything but that. Bouncing around from school to school made it difficult to maintain friends and made her the target for many fights, to compound the situation JA$ mother had two more children and married. At home she raised her younger brother and sister while her mother worked to support the family, all the while watching her back around a dope fiend stepfather. At age 12 that stress can be overwhelming and JA$ soon found her outlet through writing raps. Naturally born with a talent for rhyming JA$ would only drop freestyles for her father and close family, but this was different, rap was becoming a refuge. Around age 15, just when things seemed to be smoothing out at home, tragedy struck and JA$ father was murdered. Her biggest fan and inspiration had passed away, she made a promise to her father that she would honor him, to go after her dream, and never back down. She began battling the so-called best around her way, murdering every challenger who underestimated her skill. Her talent got her recognized by local rap crew Gorilla Pimps of Plainfield, New Jersey, who currently have a member, Sam Scarfo, signed to Def Jam. Working with Gorilla Pimps surfaced her thirst for recording and writing. High school graduation was nothing but a giant farewell as JA$ had to part ways with Gorilla Pimps and New Jersey to attend Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. By day JA$ was an International Business student and by night she was battling on blazing 102.3 radio, who crowned her the freestyle queen. Her buzz for being a vicious rapper in Tallahassee was crazy, but when would the rest of the nation see? In 2005, Daytona Beach, Florida; BETs Spring Bling, JA$ was pulled out the crowd to battle seven males. Without breaking a sweat she ran through each challenger. The crowd and atmosphere was so crazy, BET producers pulled her to the side and invited her to battle on BETs 106 & Park Freestyle Friday. JA$ would go seven weeks, undefeated, smashing her opponents on Freestyle Friday until they retired her as the second female in the hall of fame. Upon retiring JA$ signed a production deal with J.U.S.T.I.C.E League, a talented group of producers who produced joints for Mary J. Blige, Young Jeezy, and Juelz Santana; to name a few. Working with J.U.S.T.I.C.E League, JA$ developed more into the role of a recording artist, focusing and sharpening her song writing skills. The result has been fire, fire, and more fire. JA$ has went on to perform on 106 & Park Wild Out Wednesday Hall Of Fame All-stars, where she performed her club smash Like This, winning by a large audience vote percentage. She also performed at BETs Spring Bling 2006 amongst recording artist such as Ne-Yo, Jamie Foxx, Lil Wayne, Juelz Santana, Keyshia Cole and many more. Shes also had the privilege of working with great producers such as Needlz, known for his G-unit hit singles, and the Buchanans, known for Jay-Z's "What More Can I Say". This petite black and filipino mix, female, representing New Jersey has giant plans for her future. A student of hip-hop; she lives rap, breaths hip-hop, and creates hits. Sweet but street, JA$ is a versatile writer and performer. One could say the beautiful thing about hip-hop is its about expression and progression; nothing is what it once was in hip-hop. Now its the ladies turn to rule, and up steps JA$, the freestyle queen, poised and ready to take the throne...
