About Me

The launch of B EAST Magazine, Eastern Europe’s sassy fashion and attitude glossy in January, 2005, could be seen either as a motivational story for Diesel-eyed entrepreneurs; or an example of one man’s beastly energies gone terribly astray. Brought up in India, but having spent seven years in New York, B EAST Magazine’s founder, Vijai Maheshwari, only felt truly happy when he moved to Moscow in the mid 90s. Amid all the chaos and instant hedonism of post-Communist Russia, he discovered that he could finally escape the ‘boxes’ in which the world had caged him. Wild, inspired, comfortable in a strange yet exhilarating enviroment, he quickly found his place, becoming editor-in-chief of Russian Playboy in 1998.
B EAST Magazine, with its ‘Eat the West’ attitude was born out of the frustration its founder felt living in Berlin and Amsterdam in the early years of this decade. In the West, the general mood was of ‘doom and gloom’ and of the best years being behind them. In the East, meanwhile, the reverse was true. Sponsored by Puma for the first issue, BEast hit newstands across Europe more than two years ago. Since then we have been written up in various international media (www.beastnation.com), been invited to EU-sponsored conferences, and are now recognized as a major voice in the emerging New Europe.
We’re not passionate about fashion per se. as some other magazines. Fashion is only intersting for us as a game, and as a means to express opinions that don’t fit within the traditional media landscape. Fashion, glamorous as it is, is also an excellent excuse for bringing to the fore opinions that are not expressed elsewhere. Russians often complain that ‘Paris is dead boring, with ugly girls to boot!’ and that Berlin’s problem is that ‘It has no great strip bars’, but you’d never see those views expressed in a fashion magazine, except for ours!!
With fashion editorials on ‘Italian Girls Being Snooty’, ‘Eat the West’, ‘Poles Beaten up By Russians’, and ‘Radioactivity’, we venture into controversial areas that few are imaginative enough to pick up on. We’re bold, arrogant, opinionated, and independent. BEast was started with $10,000 and we have survived so far on the few advertisers that believe in our concept, and the enthusiasm of our readership base across Europe and Russia.
Our next ‘Special K’ issue will again hit out at the over-hyped and complacent West while promoting our sexy brand of beastliness. Email us at [email protected] if you’d like to be part of our punkish nation.
