The Lovings
In June 1958, two residents of virginia
Mildred Jeter a black woman and Richard
Loving a white man were married in the district of columbia. Shortly after their marriage the Lovings returned to virginia and established their household in caroline county. At the October 1958 term of the circuit court of caroline county an indictment was issued for the Lovings for violating a law banning interracial marriages.
On January 6th, 1959
The Lovings pleady guilty and were sentanced to one year in jail; however the trial suspended the jail time
for a period of 25 years on the condition that the Lovings leave the state of virginia and do not return for 25 years.
During his ruling the judge stated that in his opinion" God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red and he placed them on seperate continents.
And but for the interference with his arrangements there would be no cause for such marriages.
The fact that he seperated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix. "
In 1963, the Lovings soon moved to the district of columbia and filed a motion in court stating that there rights had been violated by the terms of the fourteenth amendment.
On June 12, 1967
After a 5 year court battle the Lovings won their case
during the proceedings the judge stated that..
"These statutes deprive the Lovings of their right of liberty and violate the due process clause of the 14th amendement. The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly persuit of happiness of free men."
" Marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man, fundamental to our very exsistance and survival.
It goes on to state that..
"The fourteenth amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry, not be restricted by invidious racial descriminations.
Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry or not to marry a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infriged by the state. These convictions must be reversed."
Loving Day THE HOLIDAY
What is Loving Day?
On June 12th, 1967,
Interracial couples became legal thanks to the Supreme Court decision entitled Loving v. Virginia. Before that date, states had the right to separate and punish interracial couples.
These punishments included imprisonment of up to ten years. Violations included marriage, sex, and living together. This issue is a part of the civil rights movement that is too often forgotten. On June 12th of every year, celebrate your legal right to love a person of any race.

We wanted to dedicate this part of our page to
~~The Lovings~~
To show our gratitude,
Without The Lovings this injustice would not have been stopped.
They paved the way for interracial couples everywhere.
Thank you!
