Peter Pan has nothing on me...

About Me

its the little things... its the little things...
that's a quote from a great Bob Schneider song called Flowerparts from his new album...
Anyway, a little bit about me is that I'm a dancer who currently works as a
Pilates instructor at a studio here in Portland that I started with my two fabulous partners.
We work freakishly hard, but things are starting to come together slowly but surely...
This seems to have been an especially challenging year, but maybe its that 5th year hump or something...
Every so often we get great perks like being able to travel overseas to train other instructors.
I have been especially fortunate having travelled to Reykjavik, Osaka, Taipei, Dublin
and perhaps in a few weeks somewhere in Cyprus...
Cyprus is sounding very good to me right about now as it has been grey and rainy for far too long...
Aphrodite was born in Cyprus!
I'm also a vegan evangelist... Oh and one other thing...if you haven't already figured it out, I'm a major Isadora Duncan fan!
Update--yes I made it to Cyprus and I hope to go back again soon!

My Interests

*MUSIC!!! I've been lucky to always have been surrounded by music. I played piano and bass violin as a kid, but then when I discovered dance I realized that was the best way for me to BE the music... I love all kinds of music from classical to punk rock, but I especially love going to live shows where there is plenty of dancing room!
*DANCE!!! The first time I danced before an audience I felt like I was coming home. I was like a fish that had been out of water all of its life and finally got to swim...
*my son who is off at college now, so no built in dog-sitter!
*my doggies, who are getting fat because mom is so busy
*my friends and family who probably think I've fallen into a parallel dimension where communication is frowned upon...

I'd like to meet:

Isadora Duncan...

"• Art is not necessary at all. All that is necessary to make this world a better place to live in is to love -- to love as Christ loved, as Buddha loved..."

Michael Franti...
"is there love enough?"... I sure hope so!

Music:

"I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music..."
George Eliot (1819 - 1880)
This woman had the best quotes! My other favorite of hers is, "It is never too late to be what you might have been..."
"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music..."
Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963), "Music at Night", 1931
"If you develop an ear for sounds that are musical it is like developing an ego. You begin to refuse sounds that are not musical and that way cut yourself off from a good deal of experience..."
John Cage (1912 - 1992)

Movies:

(in no particular order and any number of accidental omissions) wizard of oz-- gone with the wind-- bringing up baby--Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn-what a perfectly perfect film!-- my gal friday-- pretty much everything hitchcock did and preston sturges who grew up with you know who... yeah Isadora! princess bride-- the lady eve-- dr. strangelove-- and damn I wish this man had lived to do a few more films... easy rider-- nashville and every film altman has ever done-- bladerunner-- can't wait for the director's edition!-- howards end-- what the bleep do we know?--check out the dvd if you haven't seen this film yet!-- la confidential-- what the hell has Curtis Hanson been up to lately? Wish he and Russell would make another film... This film totally should have won for best film and director, not to mention the entire cast... --Apollo 13-- the insider-- gladiator-- master and commander-- ok every movie that Russell Crowe has ever done because he makes even a mediocre film compelling and what he does in films where everyone is firing on all creative cylinders is beyond description... so stay tuned and I'm sure I will think of many more films that have impacted me over the years...

Television:

first tv show I totally loved:
To catch a Thief with Robert Wagner and it would occasionally have Fred Astaire playing his dad! I try to watch the Daily show and Colbert Report as often as possible which helps keep me from going postal about the state of the world...
Six Feet Under will be mourned Sopranos is freaking me out this season!
ok and now I'm addicted to Lost too... damn it!

Books:

My Life, by Isadora Duncan (changed my life!)
I love mysteries especially with female leads so everything by Sarah Paretsky, Sue Grafton, Elizabeth George etc.
Also got completely hooked on the novels of Patrick O'Brien! Wow!
Currently reading Black Elk in Paris, so far kind of slow...
Poets--Denise Levertov, Phillip Levine, Robert Bly, Galway Kinnell, Wallace Stevens, Sappho, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan... and so many many more...

Heroes:

Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Socrates, Sappho, Joan of Arc, Gallileo, DaVinci, Jane Austen, George Eliot, Oscar Wilde, Mary Cassat, Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Gandhi, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, John Lennon... I still cry every December... Stevie Wonder, Gill Scott Heron, Michael Franti, (I hate lists gonna delete this any day now...) my son, Ash, the amazing computer whizkid my brother Stuart, journalist extraodinaire and an extraordinary human being who continues to inspire me... my sister Natalie, one of the most talented people I have ever met and who continues to grow as a painter and costume designer... my parents, Ann and Russell who have been gone for many years now, but continue to fill me with love and joy that we had so many happy years together...
