At only 22,his story is far from complete, but R&B enthusiasts can relish the opportunity to join Bolivar native Jawaskia Lake, more commonly known as "JL",on his musical journey. Lake released his first album, My Story I in February 2006,which he sold a couple thousand copies getting started. Fans of that debut albums looked forward to the sophmore project and more to come. A collaborative effort between Davil Entertainment producers "Run Shun" and "Gen", JL's sophmore project "My Story II" seeked to transition listeners from a younger, less experienced JL,to a man entering his 20s and on a path of self-discovery.A graduate of Bolivar Central High School in 2005, Lake had always been involved in music. He remembers singing and playing the drums for "The Goldenairs", a local gospel group, which his mother belonged. "I've been apart of music all my life. I was raised in a musical family. I've been singing since I can remember,"he said. JL's older brother, Kelvin Lake, whom JL described as "My Inspirational Brother", embraced gospel and is currently touring with the Memphis based gospel group "Perfection" which now "JL" is apart of. Growing up with gospel, JL recalled wanting to try a little something with a different flavor. "My R&B is more soul and you can tell that I came from a gospel background. It's really something to check into," JL said in reflection of his music". JL suppressed a smile when asked how he felt about the growing popularity of his music. " I just do what I do and I thank God everyday for the things that happen to me," he said. "People are starting to know who I am. I'm not nervous. I'm ready to do what I need to do." During his career, JL has performed all over opening for acts like Keyshia Cole, Urban Mystic, Brian Mcknight, Bobby Valentino,Marvin Sapp w/ (Perfection), Mighty Clouds of Joy also w/ (Perfection) and many other greats. He has written and produced tracks for other local artists and is excited about working with new producers and songwriters. JL is excited and is dedicated to every aspect of music production. He is currently attending Southwest Tennessee Community College, where he studies business management as a asset to his career. Whatever the future holds, JL gives the credit to God." Without him," he said, "nothing is possible."
