BIO:
Khantra was a four-person augmented hardcore band hailing from northern New Jersey. Originally formed in 1998, Khantra was well-known for a unique experimental sound not limited by typical genres and constraints. Along with this dynamic nature, the band maintained a consistent emphasis on intense live performance, layered vocal arrangements, and detailed yet powerful song structures. Khantra had been around for many years in various forms, even prior to NotRock, as evidenced in their 1999 self-released split with Annoying Customer (RIP).
Khantra's first full-length album was released on NotRock Records in 2001 and was described by Punk Planet as "medium jazzy-core." This album, however, documented a band in formation, as Khantra, at the time, was still finding and perfecting its sound. With the addition of a fourth member in 2002, the line up was complete with Adam and Ned on guitar, Eric on bass, and John on drums. The band's musical style progressed even further, combining two distinct guitar styles, an intricate and driving rhythm section, and vocals from all four members. Their sound had developed into a musicy, melodic, harmonic, jazzycore, metalcore, undefinable, distorted, feedbacking wall of noise.
The Red Album was released in 2004 on NotRock, with yet a new level of technical skill and lyrical refinement, to an eager and growing fan base. As with the first album, this release garnered praise from Punk Planet (No. 65), which described the lyrics as poetic and the music as intricately layered, riff-driven emo/hardcore. The review continues, Mid-tempo melodies and great guitar harmonies show this band has a lot of talent. I would love to see them live.
Khantra's albums and aggressive, energy-filled live shows attest to the band's ability to effectively synthesize post-hardcore, toned-down jazz, and thrash influences with personal and political subject matter into original, intense, and just plain "good" music. Over the years Khantra has brought its live shows and energy to everywhere from VFW halls, basements, and countless benefit shows (for local organizations such as the Radigals at Rutgers University and local Food Not Bombs chapters, in addition to annual events for Amnesty International) to CBGB's and Mr. Roboto, with the band members all the while maintaining their down-to-earth personalities and uncompromising work ethic.
Following several telephone conversations regarding the health and status of the present state of affairs, on 24 August 2005, with little fanfare, the band issued a final communiqué and went on indefinite hiatus.
