Home Town Hero heralds the arrival of a positively valiant rock 'n' roll band. The group's self-titled debut album is a dynamic and diverse 12-song collection fueled by Aaron Bruno's urgent vocals and guitar, Drew Stewart's sprawling six-string assaults, and the brute-force rhythms of bassist Todd Burnes and drummer Ray Blanco. But while the band's members are barely into their 20s, Home Town Hero's music possesses a craft and maturity that belies their youth. Tracks like "Questions," "Eighteen" and "Bleeds in Blue" are infused with the pugnacious spirits of power-pop, garage rock and punk, while moodier tunes like "Everything Out of Water" and "Bed of Dreams" deftly toe the line between hallucinogenic alternative pop and impressionistic balladry. In all, Home Town Hero is much like life itself - unpredictable, uncompromising and interrupted by welcome fits of humor, romance and transcendent grace.
Home Town Hero's debut disc is the result of an ever-evolving musical vision. Hailing from the same far-flung L.A. suburbs that hatched Linkin Park, Incubus, Hoobastank and Onesidezero, the band first won exposure as part of the 2000 and 2001 Vans Warped Tours, where their powerful performances and songwriting-prowess attracted major label interest. But long before those tours transformed the band from a hard working club band to global rock contenders, they worked diligently to formulate the fiery chemistry that animates their music.
Home Town Hero's roots extend back to the mid-'90s. That's when Bruno and Stewart - both students at Southern California's Westlake High School - discovered a shared passion for hardcore punk acts like Operation Ivy, Rancid and Sick of it All. "One day I was wearing a Bad Religion t-shirt, and Drew came in wearing a 10 Foot Pole t-shirt," Bruno explains. "Drew was the only guy I knew who seemed as obsessed about music as I was, so after that we started playing and ultimately writing together."
Recruiting a rhythm section, Bruno and Stewart formed a band called the Ice Monkeys, which later evolved into a band known as Insurgence. Bassist Todd Burnes joined followed thereafter by Ray Blanco - who was drafted in to replace the original drummer. Finally, their creative vision was coming into focus. The newly streamlined band began combining their punk sound with more melodic influences like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Nirvana. "When I started playing with this group, we were basically a hardcore band," Blanco explains. "All along, you know that it can only go so far, but you use it as a starting point, a stepping stone and move forward from there." "For me," Blanco continues, "I always knew I'd be in a band just like this. I dreamed about it. The goals were always set, it was a matter of making a decision at the right time to put those goals into action".
After Blanco's arrival, the revitalized band was performing in a variety of clubs, including famed Los Angeles venues like the Roxy and the Whisky A Go-Go. Just four months following Blanco's recruitment, the band confidently entered a friend's studio and recorded their independently produced EP. "The EP was a challenge because the overall sound of the band was just beginning to evolve," Bruno explains. "I think we all realized we had to improve as writers and players. But as hard as it was, it was also a really valuable learning experience."
With a renewed perspective and resultant EP completed, the band also elected to change their name to something that encapsulated their underdog ethic: Home Town Hero were born. The foursome loaded up the van and hit every city they could reach. The combined allure of the EP and manic performances ultimately resulted in a Maverick recording contract. Working with producer John Travis (Kid Rock, Buckcherry, Save Ferris), Home Town Hero entered the studio determined to combine their pop sensibilities with the powerful, hard-hitting dynamics of their live shows. "This band has a lot to do with vibe," says singer-songwriter Bruno. "When it comes to our music, we're really instinctual. We work off each other. In this band, we push each other to get the best out of ourselves." "We rewrite parts over and over just to capture the right feeling," echoes guitarist Stewart. "To me, that's what good music is about - a feeling. It's not something you can explain, you just know it. Basically, that explains our approach. Everything we do has got to feel right."
By the time they completed their debut album, Home Town Hero had found their distinct musical voice. Yet for all the attention to detail, the sessions remained an organic process. "We adopted a simple yet focused philosophy of writing solid songs and not over thinking the production," explains bassist Burnes. "We wanted to make a really honest record that was a true reflection of our live shows. There's no samplers, or DJ's of any kind on this record. It's four guys playing music." The end result can be heard in the massive, spiraling opening riff of the first track "Bleeds In Blue," which descends like a torrent then mutates into a tranquil pop lullaby. Primal drums lead the listener into "Perfect Night" then segue into a series of exquisite choruses, while "Eighteen" combines the melodiousness of vintage pop with the brute heaviness of contemporary rock. Its abrasive guitars and hulking rhythms notwithstanding, "Saturday Morning" erupts into a sinuous, slow-burning rocker. "Everything Out Of Water" offsets fractured waltz rhythms against reverberant, wall-of-sound vocals.
The album's infectious debut single "Questions," may best articulate the sound of Home Town Hero with thrashing guitars and anxious rhythms that collide with sardonic lyrics. "It's about feeling beaten down and uninspired," Bruno states simply. "It's a good song for people to work out their aggressions."
Home Town Hero bears testament to the timeless appeal of exuberant, pop-inflected rock 'n' roll, and the inseparable camaraderie of four musical brothers who share one common vision: To make music that inspires; to write songs that are intensely passionate and personal, unnervingly melodic and undeniably powerful. "I think we're a million times better for having made this record," drummer Blanco states. "That's the exciting part about this whole process -we've learned that we can grow musically and as individuals. We don't even have any idea what the next record will sound like, but we do know the music will be heartfelt and will continue to evolve."

Sounds Like: Reviewer: Ryan Landis (Graysville, Tennessee United States) - Quite rarely does an album so flawless as this come along. I picked this album up out of random curiosity and I have been very, very pleasantly surprised by it. From start to finish, it's an excellent listen. The music is great, the lyrics are intriguing, and the songs are all very catchy. Within a week of purchasing this, I had all of the lyrics memorized because I listened to it every day. I can't wait to hear more from this band.

Reviewer: "ntm138" (San Diego, CA United States) - This CD is so kick ...! All the songs are really good! I saw them in concert in LA and they were phenomenal! I instantly fell in love with them at the concert and I had to but their album right away. From that time on, I listen to their CD religiously. I have even given out some of their promotional CDs to my friends, which my friends totally dig them too now! This CD rocks, so everyone must get it! If you get a chance to see them in concert...do it!

Reviewer: Zeromus126 (Oakville, CT) - Wow! After seeing these guys open for STP, I can definitely see why they were tapped as an opening act -- the lead singer sounds hauntingly like Scott Weiland on many tracks. Regardless, the range and vocal "tweaks" can be considered a compromise between Scott Weiland and Raine Maida of OLP...which is a very good thing! The guitar work is crunchy, yet sharp and melodic on some of the mellower cuts. The versatily of these young musicians is simply amazing, and I'm sure this album will go down as one of rock's best-kept secrets!

Reviewer: upper east side (NYC) - I had the pleasure of seeing Home Town Hero open for Stone Temple Pilots at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom last April, and I was blown away by HTH's opening set. I normally make myself scarce during the opening band's set for obvious reasons, but I stuck around for HTH and I'm glad I did. This band's got **IT.** Their self-titled debut album is a welcome mix of edgy rock (listen to "Questions" and "Run Right Through") and sweet ballads (check out "Everything Out of Water"). I got to meet the guys as well, and they are a lot of fun. You might as well get their album now because they're gonna be around for the long haul. :)

Reviewer: rob winnicki (ILLINOIS) - I saw these guys in concert opening for my fav band incubus, they were spectacular, i bough the cd and it is great. they have great song writing, huge guitar riffs, excellent drum beat, and they can go soft and personal as well. Home Town Hero could be one of the best bands in the future, with their REAL rock unlike limp bizkit, vines, and those other pop bands who follow what is popular and what fans like

Reviewer: "rollingsherman" (Los Alamos, NM, USA) - i really like this cd. it has a great mix of different styles! HOME TOWN HERO RULES!...

Reviewer: carlyn (Pomona, CA) - First off, Home Town Hero's self titled debut is definitely one of the best albums i have listened in 2002. With tracks like 'Questions' that make you wanna pound your head and wave your fists in a fit of rage with its hard rock appeal and extremely catchy melody ...to 'Everything Out Of Water'--a softer ballad packed with insightful lyrics and hypnotizing tunes, this cd has deemed itself as flawless. It has remained in my cd player for over a month and continues to be played often. VERY often. I enjoy this cd so much that i'm peeing in my pants trying to explain how awesome it is...but I can't--you would have to take a listen for yourself. To sum things up, Home town hero is one kick arse rock-pop band to watch out for in 2002 and upcoming years. BUY THEIR ALBUM now. i promise you won't regret it!

Reviewer: Christine Papio (Henderson, Nevada United States) - Hometown Hero cannot simply be categorized into one genre of music because they are capable of enticing music listeners with much more. The songs in this debut CD mostly talk about love and breaking-up, but it's not the typical sappy love songs that one could alarmingly sense in pop or some emo-punk samples. Would you hear a line like "Hello, I will see you in hell." in a typical break-up love song? I think not. The music itself is edgy. Some lyrics are ambiguous while others are strangely scandalous, and that's one characteristic that you'll love about this particular group. For example, in the song "Bleeds in Blue" one of the lines goes "I'm caught up by the angel and it's heart that bleeds in blue, won't you cut out my tongue so I can dip it in to you." Man! How disturbing does that sound, you say? Yes, it is a bit creepy in writing, but the lead singer sings it in such a powerfully poetic way that you're left begging for more. The types of songs in this album come in a kaleidoscopic variety: - from happy trippy punk songs ("12 ounce", "questions") to - ambiguous break-up songs ("Bleeds in Blue", "everything out of water") to - pop-like ballads ("Bed of Dreams", "riley joe")

Reviewer: "hybridtheorist" (Ohio, USA) - Home Town Heroes is a great band. They have this common sense of melody in every song whether it is hard, heavy, and fast or if it is slow soothing. They hail from Los Angelos right in the areas that Audiovent, Hoobastank, and Incubus are from. They have pop sensibility in their songs but are still credible enough to be a great rock band. Guitarist Drew Stewart, bassist Todd Burnes, drummer Ray Blanco and frontman Aaron Bruno show that it is possible to still have an original sound even today. To see how great these guys are I suggest you check out the songs "Whos To Say" and "Run Right Through". I guarentee you are going to love these guys!

Reviewer: christopher (Buffalo, NY , USA) - I'm gonna keep it simple and short....these guys are the epitome of rock and roll. This cd is one of the best cd's i have ever bought. I buy a lot.

Reviewer: "jeclectic" (Lemon Grove, CA USA) - This one's a real keeper. Home Town Hero brings you their music via melodic guitar riffs, throbbing bass lines and hard drums hits w/ amazing vocal clarity. Aaron, Drew, Todd and Ray take you front-seated on a rocking emotional rollercoaster, with core songs like "Questions" and "Run Right Through" that reach out and grab you; to "Eighteen" and "Say I Do" that help reel you in; and "Riley Joe" and "Saturday Morning" that simply lets all you're bottled emotions flow out ever so fluently. Home Town Hero, truly put out an outstanding first release and through time, I'm sure this album will continue to enlighten me... and perhaps all of you?

Reviewer: Mike and Wendy Hand (Thousand Oaks, CA USA) - These guys really do rock! They have a fresh sound, and a mixture of hard rock with soft songs nestled in between. They go hard and fast one song and then slow it down. Truly a break out talent with a drummer that could be a nicer version of Tommy Lee, and every bit as talented. Rock on boys! See you in the Conejo.

Reviewer: "pacothefishtaco" (Los Angeles, California) - Sometimes I just don't know what to say about this band. They are definitely unique, and a lot of fun in concert. The guys are also really nice, and I've never known them to turn a fan away. It's hard to explain their music, so I think it's best just to give them a chance. You'll probably like what you hear. They're slowly taking over the underground music world, so grab up this CD before they're spoiled by fame. Bands like this aren't exactly a dime a dozen, kids. (By the way, their CD came out today and by the time I got to Best Buy after school, it was already sold out. That right there says enough, I think.)

Reviewer: B. Schuman (NY) - When I first heard this band, I thought I had heard their sound a thousand times before in a thousand bad songs. But when I listened more closely, I realized I was wrong. They don't sound like a band trying to sound like a "modern rock" band, (like, say, Nickelback) that's just the way they sound, and they're a good band. Not every track is good though. But they're a band for the time capsule- if anyone hears this in ten years, they'll be thinking that late 90s and early 00s mainstream rock could actually be good. "HTH" is representative of the musical style of it's time, only better than most music of it's time has to offer, yet not as popular- sort of like Big Star to the early 70s. I really hope they stick around longer.
