Northernly is an indie-folk trio from Easthampton, Massachusetts with multi-instrumentalists. Male and female voices/harmonies accompanied by piano, cello, guitars, bass, glockenspiel, and basic/quiet percussion. Distinct melodies and a hushed, forthright approach to songwriting.
In Fall of 2006, after a 2 year (health-related) hiatus from making music, pianist Matthew Larsen got together with Rebekah Dutkiewicz (cello, guitar) and Aric Bieganek (drums, glockenspiel, bass, and guitar) to write new material, revive and re-work some old songs, and begin performing again. Originally called North, the band changed its name in December of 2006 to Northernly.
Lyrically, themes of mortality, health, anticipation, commitment, perseverance, love, friendship, hope, and personal growth resonate in these songs. Lead vocal duties are shared between Matthew and Rebekah and complimented by two and three part harmonies. A bittersweet sadness in many of the melodies and gentle, articulate instrumentation results in an ethereal quality.
Sincere and forthright, Northernly continues to evolve. They have performed at a variety of venues in the Northeast including The Space in Hamden, CT, Java Hut in Worcester, MA, Blue Mermaid in Portsmouth, NH, Brooklyn Coffee & Tea House in Providence, RI, Pioneer Arts Center in Easthampton, MA, Bishop’s Lounge in Northampton, MA, Mocha Maya’s in Shelburne Falls, MA, Gulu Gulu Cafe in Lynn, MA.
