Superbacana

About Me

Superbacana was born from the meeting of two worlds...the live music scene of the Bay Area and the electronic world of computerized dance music. Superbacana was founded by bassist Caroline Chung, who has been an integral part of the Bay Area's live music scene for many years. With a focus on Brazilian rhythms and sounds, mixed up with Funk, Jazz, AfroBeat sprinkled with some House and Drum-N-Bass, Superbacana is developing a sound all their own. It's function is as a collective working along side of Producers like Khalil Daok Anthony (Self-Titiled-Released EP) and Christopher Wing (Reza on Ubiquity comp) and inviting some of the Bay Area's best musicians to join forces in producing some soulful rhythmic dance music. Superbacana caught the attention of Ubiquity Record's Andrew Jervis in late of 2002, who included their cover of a traditional African prayer song, "Reza", on their compilation Rewind 2. And on October of 2003, Superbacana self-released a four song EP including a couple of originals- a Brazilian Drum-N-Bass excursion titled "Era Verdade" and a funky, soulful dance track titled "Life Flows" along with an urban rendition of the Brazilian classic "Canto De Ossanha" and a sexy down tempo version of Sade's "Paridise". This release has caused an inkling of a buzz, landing on Truby Trio and Nicola Conte's top ten list. There is a full length album on the way of mostly all originals and some remixes by local super stars. "Superbacana has been tearing up spots like the Elbo Room for a few years now. Here, they kill Baden Powell's "Canto De Ossanha" as well as Sade's "Paradise", and offer up the lovely original "Era Verdade". Maximum floortime." - XLR8R"Superbacana serves up infectious smoothness that will get you out of the lounge and onto the floor." - BPM"Superbacana's self titled EP has four songs, including the brilliant original "Era Verdade", which features unbelievable guitar work over a frenetic beat and charming languid vocals by Tika Morgan." - THE BEATSuperbacana are a new outfit from the Bay Area, mixing electronics with traditional Brazilian business . .Ubiquity: How long have you been together? Superbacana: Just 4 or 5 months! I (Caroline, bass player) met Christopher the electronics guy on Craig list and we put the band together. This'll be my 3rd band in 4 years, and so far it's going really well.Ubiquity: Why did you choose to cover "Reza"? Superbacana: It was originally an African prayer song and is one of my all-time favorite Brazilian tunes. The band had performed it a few times and it just felt right live - but we definitely wanted to turn it into a dance track when we recorded it.Ubiquity: What do you think people who know the more traditional versions of "Reza" would think of yours?Superbacana: Hopefully they'd like it! Electronic musicians are diving into traditional sounds as fast as possible whereas it seems that live music fans and musicians are coming to terms with electronic music at a slow rate . . .Ubiquity: What are your top 5 Brazilian tunes?Superbacana: 1. Upa Neginho/ Elis Regina 2. Lamento No Morro/ Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum 3. Deusa Do Amor/ Moreno Velosa +2 4. Casa Forte/ Snowboy featuring Liliana Chachian 5. Brief Passions/ Zuco 103CURRENTLY SUPERBACANA IS WITH NEWHOUSE RECORDSSuperbacana's new track Wondering and the previously released, but remastered track, Era Verdade are both on San Francisco Under a Groove, a recently released compilation from Newhouse Records.
