About Me

Decipher: The Music, The Movement, The Message first launched on the Pacifica airwaves in January 2005. Each weeknight from 11p-12a we broadcast live on Washington DC's own WPFW 89.3FM, playing the hip hop, poetry, and politics you will not hear on mainstream radio. Balance is a beautiful thing. Each and every Tuesday of course you can catch Blackademics, the program hosted by Shani Jamila with beats by DJ 2 Tone Jones. Our show focuses on critically analyzing the intellectual and cultural work of hip hop generationers. We work to contextualize social justice issues within an intergenerational and international framework. Since our launch last year we have taken on topics like the State of the Hip Hop Union, the History of Radical Black Journalism, and Cultural Accountability in Artistic Production. Our guests have included artists like Dick Gregory, jessica Care moore-Poole, HeadRoc, and Thomas Sayers Ellis; authors like Dr. William Jelani Cobb, Dr. Clarence Lusane, Dave Zirin, and Bakari Kitwana; and activists from around the world including Kimmie Weeks (Liberia), Kadija Sesay (England), Malia Lazu, and James Early. We've also featured commentaries from Amiri Baraka, Elaine Brown, and Davey D among others. And the music- PE, Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Amel Larrieux, Saul Williams, Tribe, Paris, Lauryn, Mos, Kweli, Jean Grae, Little Brother, Orishas, Asheru and the Els, mad local artists, global hip hop, and quality cuts you've never ever heard. DJ 2-Tone Jones is like that.If you're not in the DC area you don't have to miss out. We stream live worldwide at www.wpfw.org, and selected shows are archived at http://voxunion.com/blackademics.html. And of course we would love to hear from y'all right here at my space.WPFW 89.3FM, Mon-Fri 11p-12a.... Keep it locked.
