Shmu aka Sam Chown

About Me

Shmu grew up in Toronto, Ontario. He met himself when he was four, which is when he really started to appreciate music. Throughout his life, he would make tapes and recordings of himself so that he could hear where he was at as a musician and improve upon it. He sings and plays almost all the instruments on the recordings, including drums, programming, keys, guitars and bass guitar. The music manages to be quirky while maintaining a sense of accessibility. it is a balance between catchy tight song craft and a sense of cerebral etherealness. Shmu’s music can best be described as atmospheric dance rock, in that it is very textured and layered with thick harmonies. Sounds like a multi-generational mix of: Crobsy, Stills, Nash & Young 60s Steely Dan 70s Police 80s Smashing Pumpkins 90s Incubus 00s
