5 STARR, a big name that derives not from a large stature, but a captivating presence. Born in Poughkeepsie, a small city in upstate New York (or "Power Kingdom," as the local natives call it), in September 1983, this young man was blessed with an ear for music since the tender age of 6. His mother vividly remembers him running around the house rapping to nobody but himself. By the age of 15, he started taking music seriously and others started to truly recognize his extreme creative and raw talent. He soon became known as 5 STARR by friends on the block; as he was always sitting on the stoop with a 5 Star notebook writing his lyrics.
Like so many other young men, 5 STARR had trouble with the law. However, his conscious decision to change his path separated him from the pack. He began to focus on his many talents and strategize ways to achieve his dreams. 5 STARR started to transfer the time he spent in the streets into studio time, where he honed his lyrical skills.
It wasn't until 2003 that 5 STARR started to take pursuing music as a career seriously. In 2003, he linked up with Music to Light, a nonprofit organization where 5 STARR gained recording and studio skills. Soon after, in 2005, 5 STARR began traveling to and from Manhattan, and running up to DJ's in promotional vans to toss in his own CD's. He also stood near the Bad Boy Records building to try to promote himself in every way possible even harassing the people coming out of it. Soon in 2006, 5 STARR finally met up with a local producer that he felt matched his unique flow, W.W. Eastside. As a result, 5 STARR released a self-titled album, Wild Wild Eastside. Determined to get his musical talents out to the public, 5 STARR delivered 200 copies of that album himself. To this day, people still give 5 STARR props and credit for his accomplishment, calling it "a classic". The public was only seeing the very beginning of 5 STARR at this point.
Since then, 5 STARR has had numerous songs played on Vassar College's local radio station, 91.3 WVKR by DJ Artiste. He has also performed at The Remote Lounge @ the Faces In The Crowd Showcase, Club Home in Midtown in New York City. He had performed with artists such as Kid Novice, a Bronx native who has worked with the likes of BET's won 106th and Park's battle champ, Poster Boy to Cory Gunz, who currently has a single out with music sensation Ryan Leslie.
5 STARR also has a wide range of musical influences. Nas, Kanye West, Jay Z, Mos Def and LL Cool J are to name just a few. With plenty of musical experience backing him, 5 STARR linked up with Julius.L.Write and D.Ogden to form Shyne Regardless Entertainment, his biggest accomplishment to date. In 2008, 5 STARR released a mixtape entitled, "Only Came To Eat, Vol. 1", hosted by Dipset's own DJ Moe Sticky. Since the release of the mixtape, over 1,000 copies have been distributed between New York, Virginia, and Florida. Currently, 5 STARR is once again, hard at work. This time, on his new mixtape, "Only Came to Eat, Vol. 2, Dinner With OOO WOP." He is also working on his EP, Wish on a STARR.
5 STARR exemplifies the infamous saying, "big things come in small packages". 5 STARR's catchy hooks, endless flows, lyrical versatility and his non nonchalant attitude on tracks have made him a force to be reckoned with. The combination of his talents and his spirit definitely makes him a shooting star. You can hate him or love him, ask 5 STARR if he cares. In a recent interview, when asked what sets him aside from other major artists in the music industry, he replied, "I'm natural talent, nothing created, nothing watered down. What you hear on track is my thought process at the time. Whether its love, hate, anger, whatever...I'm comfortable being me".
