The name Eardley originates at a small hamlet on the North Staffordshire/Cheshire border in England. The family were almost certainly tenants of the powerful Marcher Barons, the Audleys, who were based a few miles from Eardley End at Heleigh Castle.
This much can be gleaned from the family crest with its canton of the fourth an Audley fretty in red and gold.
The motto is "Non Nobis Solum" or "not for ourselves alone" denoting selflessness.
The name is a loconym, i.e. based on a place. If you go back far enough all Eardleys are related no matter how distantly.
For some years there have been excellent resources for researching the family name history.
The best is US-based eardley.org
It is an excellent information resource about history and events such as the millenium gathering in the village of Audley which sparked off the Eardley Window restoration project for the church.
I am also interested in using the phenomenon which is MySpace to bring together Eardleys on a more regular basis.
By using the bulletins, blogs, and messaging the important and far-flung Eardley genes can unite in their talents!
We have musicians, film-makers, writers, artists - all of whom can benefit from mutual contact.
There are now tens of millions of MySpace users so let's get networking!
