“Curses!†cd review Safety by: RJ
From a truly objective point of view: Safety is one of the best punk bands to come out of Florida in a long time. If this statement seems cocky, it’s because you haven’t listened to Curses!
The boys in Safety; Andy Diaz (guit/vox), Grayum Vickers (bass/vox), and Ben Matras (drums/vox) have dropped an album that is good from beginning to end. Curses! is right on the mark in showcasing this bands ability to be eclectically erratic yet smoothly structured. There are no gratuitous sequences, every note is justified and every progression necessary. With gruff melodic vocals and Safety’s seamless transitions between chest beating punk, ska-core, and undistorted animosity, Curses! is as compelling as it is fun to listen to.
Vacation Bible School opens the album nicely with thunderous ska-core pessimism. The backdrop trumpet and raging bass lines give way to the boys chanting “No one cares about you.†Through the next couple tracks Let The Babes In and Hold It Like This you start hearing the riotous vocals full force. They’re loud and abrasive but surprisingly melodic when they double up and it makes for songs that get stuck in your head. What Am I Gonna Do On A Submarine? is a great example of the enticing harmonies that dominate the CD. The beginning of the song features some clever guitar work that reminded me of some classic Descendants tunes. All of the songs on Curses! are worth rocking to, it’s not one of those CDs where you skip through tracks to find the gems. And the only thing better than listening to Curses! is seeing Safety perform live, so keep your eye out for them.
Recorded at Rock, Paper, Studios in Tampa and mastered at Morrisound Recording, the quality of the album is exceptional as well. Curses! was engineered by Jesse Morris and produced by Ryan Gardner and will certainly bring some recognition to the relatively new indie label Copacetic Records. You can pick this CD up at any Safety show as well as from Interpunk. For more information, visit the boys at WWW.SAFETYFLORIDA.COM.
