Above all things, the name alone makes a bold statement. PURE GENIUS is comprised of three Louisiana-born brothers: Lil Trey da Mastermind (19), Mad V da General (20), and Big Joe da Warewolf (23). Born Trevor “Lil Trey,†Mathew “Mad V,†and Jonathan “Big Joe†Vicks, they possess a creative outlook like no other. Among the groups descriptions posted by their followers are weird, different, creative, unique, inspiring, original, and even strange. The trio likes to call it “three styles wrapped in one.†Their self-proclaimed ingeniousness created the name Pure Genius. They believe that music has no limits or rules; therefore, striving for perfection is endless. Although Pure Genius’ story sounds glamorous, the road they travel is not paved. Just getting the vehicle started was difficult, but the industry could not hide the key for long. When their eldest brother, Nolan, teamed to create V.C. Entertainment (2004), the restraints were disintegrated. The group became limitless. With full creative control, Pure Genius voice music in numerous personalities. They deliver thought-provoking stories, fun music, universal issues, and personal beliefs. All of which contain an underlying or obvious meaning. Because of the group’s often unnoticeable concept, listeners were left scratching their brain upon Pure Genius’ premiere. But as time progressed and the group matured, ears were able to dig where they were coming from. With maturity came aggressive topics. Though Pure Genius expresses these matters differently, controversy can still arise. The difference, in fact, is the ideas that the members: choose not to curse, voice their spiritual beliefs, and formulate tricky articulations of what they are discussing. The arguments that are mostly ignored by society have a luminous light casted on them by Pure Genius. The trio’s sophomore album, America, Open up the Door, is a prime example. The title alone can cause miscomprehension of the project’s purpose, but there is definitely an underlying meaning. That connotation, in reality, is “America, let us in so we can be heard and simply have fun.†Although the theme is straightforward, this new album is a listening album. It is actually an intermission to the DEMO-stration chronicles (which are the series of albums demonstrating the “three styles wrapped in one†concept). The three young men of nine siblings come from a musical background. Lil Trey, Mad V, and Big Joe refuse to let their gift lie dormant.
