The Sursiks specialize in turning non-musical material into music. Their debut cd "I didn't know i was singing, vol. 1" consists of 16 songs constructed from the rhythms and pitches of human speech as found on answering machine messages. The notes and rhythms of the messages are painstakingly figured out, and songs are built around the resultant melodies. The Sursiks are a REAL band of REAL people, playing REAL instruments.
The Sursiks 2nd cd (released March 28 2007), "Lydia Grace" is a collection of 13 songs written and sung by a 3 year old girl. The combination of the world-view of a 3 year old and the profoundly unique musical style of the Sursiks makes "Lydia Grace" a truly one-of-a-kind recording."I didn't know i was singing vol. 1" and "Lydia Grace" are both available from cdbaby.com!
The Sursiks 3rd cd is entitled "Christmas in March". The release date December 15th 2008. "Christmas in March" is 50+ seamless minutes of music "sung" by voices from television, radio and various other sources. Commercials, news reports, self-help tapes, religious programs, pop radio-dj banter, and a host of other recordings are mixed up and set to music, in order to create extremely funny new perceptions of our media environment. The Sursiks' musical arrangements on this recording include the usual rock instruments plus a wide variety of percussion instruments, flute, saxes, trumpets and violins. "Christmas in March"will have you singing along to things you didn't think were music, and laughing the rest of the time.
The Sursiks' next release will be the long-anticipated "I didn't know i was singing vol. 2" The Sursiks employ the same method of turning speech into singing as they do on "vol 1", but the voices this time are those of television and radio news broadcasts. Turn on the news right now and imagine that the anchor is singing (along with a band or orchestra), and you pretty much have the concept.
