Stephen Mark Barchan (b.1982) studied composition with Richard Steinitz, Edwin Roxburgh (supported by the EMI Music Sound Foundation) and Howard Skempton. His music has been played throughout Europe, Australia and the USA, along with various radio broadcasts. Some of his pieces are available from the British Music Information Centre.Prizes include the 4th Andrzej Panufnik International Young Composers Competition (2002), Denis and Maud Wright Award for Composition (2003), J Wood and Sons Prize (2004) and joint-second prize in Philip Bates Prize for Young Composers (2005). He is currently on the spnm shortlist (2006-2009).Festivals and concert organisers who have presented Barchan's music include British Flute Society International Convention, COMA, 14th International New Music Week Festival, LSO Discovery, Park Lane Group and Soundwaves Festival, at venues including Blackheath Concert Hall, LSO St Lukes, Purcell Room (Southbank Centre), The Warehouse, and the Weill Recital Hall (Carnegie Hall). Performers of Barchan's music include Endymion, Ensemble Firebird, Ensemble Octandre, Psappha, Sounds Positive, Warehouse Ensemble, Aruna Narayan, Camilla Hoitenga, Christopher Redgate, David Purser, Lior Eitan and Peter Donohoe.Future projects include new pieces for Okeanos, Goldberg Ensemble, a viola sextet for Rivka Golani, a new small ensemble piece for Sounds Positive, and a commission from Twenty Four 7 TV to write additional music for the television show 'The Fast Lane' (currently broadcasting on Sky Channel 413 and Virgin). He has also been commissioned to write the score for the 2009 film 'A Closed Book' (also known as 'Blind Man's Bluff' and based on the short novel 'A Closed Book' by Gilbert Adair) directed by Raoul Ruiz and starring Daryl Hannah, Tom Conti, Miriam Margoyles and Elaine Paige, due to be launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2009.
