I am here for Friends

About Me

Larger than life thirty-something living, loving, working, singing and studying in the fabulous city that is Edinburgh.

Home is a lovely flat of my own south of the city centre, that's currently being shared with my younger brother while he sorts out what he wants to do with the next chapter of his life.

Love is pretty one-sided at the moment. It's horrid but there's nothing I can do about it. I love the world I live in, I love my neighbourhood, I love my studies and my singing. I'm also in love with someone who isn't interested in me, which sucks.

I work as a development worker in a non-governmental organisation. It's been great but there's no scope for career progression and sadly it's time for me to look for a new challenge. It's something I need to do for my own sanity, but I'll still be sorry to say goodbye when the time comes.

Singing is my passion. I sing with the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and the Scottish Plainsong Choir, and I also have occasional singing lessons which I positively adore. If I could have a career as a professional singer, I'd jump at it, but I reckon I'm too old now.

I'm studying part-time for an MBA at Edinburgh University. It's a lot of hard work but it'll be worth it in the end. Not sure what I'll do with all the spare time I'll suddenly find myself with when I graduate - singing perhaps?

Life is busy, stressful, challenging and rarely boring!

My Interests

Too many to list!

I'd like to meet:

Jane Austen, to introduce her to the concept of feminism and to sit in a corner bitching about everyone we're watching.

David Tennant, to find out to find out whether he's as lovely in real life as he appears in interviews.

Neil Hannon, to thank him for the music.

Colin Firth, but I'd probably embarrass myself horribly by drowning in a pool of my own drool.

Music:

Too much to list, but here's a select few:
The Divine Comedy
The Proclaimers
Kaiser Chiefs
Queen
KT Tunstall
Lightning Seeds
Christy Moore
Ute Lemper
David Gray
Weird Al Yankovic,
Jarvis Cocker,
Duke Special
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Magnetic Fields
Suzanne Vega
Enya
Clannad
Billy Joel
Right Said Fred
George Gershwin
Eric Bogle
Cole Porter
Tom Lehrer
Bryn Terfel
Edinburgh Festival Chorus
Bach
Monteverdi
Mozart

Verdi

Movies:

Too many to list, but Dead Poets Society is my all-time favourite.

Television:

Dr Who, Hollyoaks, Casualty/Holby City, Judge John Deed, Inspector Morse. Comedies like Black Books, Blackadder, Father Ted, Friends, Fawlty Towers.

Books:

Where to start? Mansfield Park is my favourite but I love all Jane Austen and some of the other classics, particularly Thomas Hardy. Modern classics are great too, particularly E.M. Forster, Evelyn Waugh, Muriel Spark and David Lodge. Historical novels/biographies about the Tudors and Stuarts, particularly by Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir. 'Chick lit' is great too, especially Joanna Trollope.

Heroes:

everyone's a hero.

Getting on with it

I've been told I need to stand up for myself more.  This is undoubtedly true.  I am a doormat and allow too many people to walk all over me, take me for granted and generally abuse my good n...
