About Me
Mirika's diversity in her music is as varied as her adventurous lifestyle. She was named Quebec's 2002 Songwriter of the Year and proudly represented Quebec at the Canadian National Songwriters competition. But her loyalties have never rested with one particular city, province or style. In both her approach to life and to her approach to music, she is as versatile as she is outspoken. After garnering attention for her intimate performances, hallowing vocals, and satirical lyrics, Mirika realized that the traditional music industry leaves very little room for artist development (or for diversity within one artists repertoire). She feels great admiration for artists like Beck, who's carrier boasts versatility in genres while maintaining his artistic integrity. Where she had once found frustration with her "salesgirl by day and songstress by night" life-style, she quickly understood that it was her ticket to creating a body of work that she could be proud of.Following her success in Montreal, Mirika moved to Vancouver to pursue social change as a provincial educator/advocate for foster care in British Columbia. She continued to live on a salesgirl budget and used her professional income and project management experience to start her own record label, Wreck Me Records. Ever a perfectionist when it comes to her creative process, it took two years to release her first independent offering, "Your Absence Kills Cities". The result, a 12 track gem articulating the anonymous underpinnings of North American cities, was by all accounts worth the wait. But the songs themselves were written over an even longer time frame. Strict rules at the private school she attended forbid recorded music. In the absence of sound, Mirika wrote her first songs at 12, started fronting bands at 14, and has since played every kind of venue you could imaging: from Vancouver, Canada's trendy art shows, to obscure ex-patriot bars in Prague, Czech Republic. Mirika's infectious melodies and narrative vocals acclimatize to a variety of venues and appeal to a diverse group of listeners.Perhaps this is due to her varied influences and her ability to draw inspiration from most everything: from life experiences, to current political events, to great works in history. Through her love of artists such as Milan Kundera, Elliot Smith, Marlene Dietrich, Nina Simone (just to name a few), Mirika saw the great personal, social, and political impacts of artists with something to say. For Mirika, it is not enough to simply make music, she strives to make an impact. With a bright head on her very pretty shoulders, this talented young woman will no doubt have a long and successful career doing just that. The CricketSoda Myspace Editor!Get Your Own! | View Slideshow
