About Me
In a world where emcees are constantly seen, forever forgotten, and never remembered, there stands one.
Born in a military base located next to Columbus, Georgia(Ft. Benning), Ricardo Mayo never knew he was to experience this hip-hop. Living in a trailer, my earlier remembrances of music had to be Michael Jackson in the thriller video, which eventually had me shook for life(lol)! I would put my face on the television and kiss soap opera models.
As I grew, my mother and my father ended up leaving the trailers for an apartment, and music was still a huge force, forever prevalent in my life. Whether it be my mother's singing(which is what she is great at, and known for in her old community, being that she was a singer in talent shows before giving birth to her son), or my father's hip-hop tapes, music was always around. My mother would sing nursery songs to me, and I will forever remember my father having me in the car with his mixed drink of choice, Crown Royal and Coca-Cola, drinking and driving while I listened to the radio happily. I knew he'd keep me safe, I'm not even gonna front on his gangsta!lol.
When not at home, I would be with my grandmother, either that or at daycare or school. My grandmother was a huge force in me doing the music, as she would sing gospel to put me to sleep as a baby, as well as to pass time while living in the projects of Phenix City, Alabama. I was always bad in school, and came home to several whippings, as well as whippings suffered during school(thank God for capital punishment!). I would leave school with notes pinned to me to Child's World Daycare, where I would run into my second love; women.
As I got older, I ended up with several toys, but my stereo was the favorite. I would pack it full of D Batteries, and play the only two cassette singles that I had, Slick Rick's "Children's Story," and Debbie Gibson(sorry that I cannot remember the title of her track). Radio Raheem in his prime.
Later on in life, I would become a huge fan of Wu-Tang Clan, and begin to collect cds, as well as create mixtapes for my listening. Recording friday night radio, it never came to mind that I would have my own project to create and work on.
Even older in life, I learned to freestyle at the age of 16. I was always a great writer, and never wrote rhymes until I became 18. I was a college kid around this time, and hip-hop was all that I lived for, that and great grades! I would freestyle with friends, as well as lay a couple tracks with Abyss Poetic(now in a group called Area Connection, founded out of the 757), a gifted individual that owned all his equipment and did everything in-house. It was then that I realized that my dream to become an emcee was VERY real.
It was when I went home to Maryland to become a soldier that I finally had access to record an album for myself. I would go to the recreational center for the soldiers(being that we were living on a military base) and perform freestyles as well as battle other emcees. I would also get some time on the turntables before the crowd came to the party, always gaining facetime with the DJ, June-Luv. It was here that I met Logics, who knew somebody who knew somebody, who knew Rich at Corporation Music Group.
Rich's work goes all the way to the Hit Factory, which is where he earned his bearings for music production. At his in-house studio is where we would go to lay tracks for mixtapes, as well as future albums that were in the plans to put together. During that duration, "Logics and Reasoning: The Mixtape" was created, as well as "May'Naise: Best Thing Since!", both featuring Logics as well as myself.
Things have changed in its' time; Along with minor experience with Fruity Loops while in college, I have been able to put together 12 tracks, similar to Jay Dee's "Donuts," worthy of both listening quality as well as the ablility to record over. I titled this cd "Jotted Thoughts," created by the artist Monster Hungry, which is me! I gave out a few copies to musical friends, and took the last copy to Commonwealth, while looking for work(a job!lol).
I also had previous experience with "The Best Since!," giving out 100-some-odd copies, whether it be at work, at the club, or to family and friends. Plans to push more copies? Sure! It was also placed online, whether it be Streetsoundz(http://www.streetsoundz.cjb.net) or MySpace(myspace.com), as well as the whole album available for download on Esnips.com(http://www.esnips.com/web/monsterhungrysotherstuf
f). "That's How I Know!", was also played for a listening crowd at the recreational center by June-Luv(BIG UP!). Also, another big up to Brian Kayser, writer for hiphopgame.com, being that he gave me a shout-out in one of his columns for the review of "Best Thing Since!" Good Look.
Future plans are to release several mixtapes down the line, as well as the opportunity to continue to expand my listening music through Fruity Loops, possibly creating a finished product, whether it be instrumental, or an album, or both. An independent artist with a label name, plans for my own are in the works as well. Not intended to scare majors away, any love is welcome and expected! Looking for a deal? Yes, no, maybe so! Currently looking forward to a career! "And some cool ish along the way..That's what it's all about!"
