...And now for the cheezy Band Bio:
Malia Star was brought to life a little over a year ago in by overwhelming cosmic forces of the Rock Gods. The Los Angeles based band unexpectedly formed when front woman, Malia, guitarist Drew Decaro, and Drummer Brian Henspeter were thrown together on a jazz gig. Malia had already been writing and was looking for the right guys and knew immediately that she had found the perfect combination of talent, charisma, and cool. They joined forces, brought Josh Nyback onboard to play bass, and have been rockin the Sunset Strip ever since.
The bands diverse roots bring an eclectic blend of musicianship and vibe. Drew DeCaro, lead guitarist for the band, began his musical career at the age of 10 in his hometown of Baltimore, MD and has been performing, recording and teaching avidly for the past twelve years. Now 22, Drew hosts the weekly acoustic showcase Noise in the Basement at the legendary Viper Room on the Sunset Strip and attends California State Universitys Jazz Studies program at Northridge, where he is a graduating senior. Drew moved to California from the East Coast two years ago and has played many of the countrys best and most renowned venues in L.A., San Francisco, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and New York. He has recorded on sessions for Mikal Blue and Drew Mazurek, among others, and teaches guitar lessons out of his studio in Los Angeles.
Josh Nyback, wicked cool bass player extrodinaire, is 21 years old and has been performing and recording music for the past six years and is a native of Los Angeles. Josh also performs with the female-fronted soul/funk group Aijia, and the Las Vegas, NV based rock band Valentine. He also has recorded with Mark Vogal, Josh Fresse and various other artists.
The bombastic Brian Henspeter not only can rock a headband in style, he rocks the hell out of any genre of music he plays (f.y.i.- Travis Barker is a fan)!! Brians from La Verne, CA and started banging away at age 10 when a friend convinced him to form a band. The friend quit guitar within a month, but Brian never stopped playing because drums are way too awesome. Brian continues to gig in various jazz and rock groups, and attends Cal State Northridge.
Serendipity: being in the right place at the right time. For Malia, Singer/Songwriter for "Malia Star", this aligning of the planets occurred as an outlandish adolescent growing up in Hawaii. "I remember being this rebellious, out of place sixteen-year old and getting the lead role in the school musical. From the moment the curtain opened, something else just took over, a power that I was completely unaware of; I felt comfortable in my own skin. I knew that this was what I was meant to do, it was like, 'Oh, this is what it feels like to be home, to belong'. Malia dove head first into performing and has never looked back. Malia honed her craft performing a wide array of musical styles in venues all over the world, including various corporate show bands, cruise ships, and theme parks. She also created, choreographed, and produced one of the hottest shows in town, 3-D VA, which runs on the Las Vegas Strip at the Aladdin Casino and Resort.
The band is hard at work writing, recording, and co-producing their first album. Working with a wide array of musicians and producers, such as Mark Schulman (Pink, Velvet Revolver, Cher) and Mitchell Sigman (Berlin).
Malia Stars songs echo a sentiment of dysfunction, addiction, and insanity, but ultimately leave the listener with a sense of survival and overcoming adversity in a world that doesnt always give you a full deck of cards. "I like to write about my neurosis, my insecurities. When I write about them, they dont seem so overwhelming and if someone can connect and feel like they are not alone in their craziness, our job is done.
