About Me

Bats are amazing and wonderful animals. They've been unfairly maligned due to their being creatures of the night and relatively unknown. Horror movies haven't helped bats' public image, either. In fact, they're gentle, intelligent, extremely beneficial animals. Most of the bats in the US, Canada, and western Europe are insectivorous. One small bat can eat anywhere from 600-1200 mosquito sized insects in an hour. For more information on bat rehabilitation, visit www.austinbathospital.com www.batworld.orgFor more information on bats in general, visit www.batcon.orgFor more information on wildlife rehabilitation, visit www.wildcareoklahoma.org

Sad, but not surprising

The red bat who came in Friday died before I could euthanize him.  I would have preferred a release of a different sort.

Evening bats released

The red bat continues to decline.  I've been debating about whether or not to go ahead and euthanize him, since death seems the inevitable end of this, but each time I start to think seriously about i...

Not looking good

The red bat's condition has continued to worsen.  I've just given him another injection, but it's just to keep him hydrated.  He refused food last night, and I haven't yet persuaded him to eat this mo...

A little concerned

The new bat has me somewhat concerned.  He refused to eat last night.  Red bats LOVE to eat, and they're great eaters, even when they're stressed.  For a red bat to refuse food when it is hungry is a ...

New bat in

Yesterday afternoon, I got in a male eastern red bat.  He was found on the ground in front of a bank, in a high traffic area--so the bank employees were concerned that he might be injured or that cust...

Eastern pipistrelle

Since the weather has cooled off, I've been getting in (and getting calls regarding) bats roosting in "inappropriate" spots during the day.  Virtually all of these have been evening bats and East...
