fargo (the one that started it), nights of cabiria (giulietta masina, unforgettable), LOTR trilogy (have a soft spot for the big epics, and these are devastating), the shining (scary, weird, powerful), public enemy (one of the greatest mob films), jackass the movie (never laughed harder at a film), taxi driver (hollywood character study at its purest), raging bull (same as the last one, more personal, emotional), 400 blows (sweet, thoughtful 1st half, devastating 2nd), godfather films (operatic filmmaking that manages to be unpretentious), maya deren films (new to me, but starting to open doors creatively), goodfellas (classic), elephant (van sant made the movie i wanted to make in highschool. lots of truth), eternal sunshine (technically fun/personal/exciting, heart breaking, and its got a big following!), the truman show (so imaginative, the ending, pounding on the sky breaks my heart every time), breathless (unique and its sadness is really smart. technically brilliant), saving private ryan (great if only for that opening sequence, and the moments leading up to the last battle were unforgettable), pulp fiction/kill bill movies (such exciting, genre molestation), citizen kane (so many dimensions, it'll always be great fun to come back to and see something new/inspiring), thin red line (not perfect, but great poetic film making, big influence), rebel without a cause (james dean man... THAT is acting), blade runner (one of the most beautifully shot films ive seen, deep), the conversation (not the best, but interesting, im basing a character off of harry), akira (not sure if hand drawn animation can get better than this) ... and alot more.
